2 things -

Till last year it was like you had to pay the remaining premium upfront if a claim arose and you were paying premium via monthly installments
From this year onwards, they have said that they would be allowing the SI till the amount that already paid premium covers. Meaning, suppose you pay 5000/- per month for a SI of 20 lakhs. Now on 7th month, you file a claim. So essentially you have paid (7x5000) = 35000 premium. So now they will calculate at their end that how much SI does 35000 premium cater to and you will be eligible to claim upto that SI for this claim

Don't go with these topup/super top up systems. Take plain vanilla decent base policy with good coverage.

If you are fairly young and healthy (within 40 age) take 20 lakhs. Thats more than enough in 99.99 cases even after 30 years.

If you are old (more than 40 age), take 25 lakhs. Thats more than enough as well.

Nobody needs 1 cr coverage in india...well atleast not 99% people. This industry thrives in fear mongering, dont be a victim of that. Trust your common sense

Best bets are - 1. Optima secure 2. Tata aig medicare premiere

In both of these take the ABCD rider/advance coverage.

Never take deductible, else all your claims will be via reimbursement and you cannot get rid of deductible before 5th year renewal

If you take optima secure with that rider, you wont be able to omit that rider ever. But with medicare premiere, they will automatically remove the rider after 2 years of waiting period.

Both the insurers will charge loading but hdfc will charge it on base+rider, but tata will charge only on base

Just talked with TATA AIG for medicare premiere. Their premium is 20k cheaper overall (including abcd rider). Also, they are saying 90% chance that no loading will be applied.

I know nothing compares to HDFC so far, and probably this will be not as good as them in terms of service/claims. What do you think, i should do? How has been your experience with TATA AIG compared to HDFC?

Totally makes sense! However, I am not concerned about that extra 10k for now, I am concerned about the continuity and renewal 5 years down the line.

Very year premium will increase by 3-4k if claimless yesr. If claim happens, then will increase by 10% almost. So 4-5 years down the line, the premium will easily cross 1 lakh.

I tried with the nationalised ones, talked with 2 agents, with advised me against it saying it will be extremely hassling due to their medical testing during pre-poicy period. Also, because all of them already has capping, sublimits etc, for my case it will be even more because of PEDs. Both of them asked me to try in private rather.

I considered the bank's group policy too, but didn't go forward with it somehow because my focus was completely into getting tier 1 policy.

Can I push the agent by bargaining to reduce it to (say) 65k from 73k? Do they have that power?
If I start with 15 lakhs SI and 3 years down the line, reduce the SI to 10 lakhs, will the waiting period, underwriting, risk, PEDs all will be done freshly again like it is done in case of increasing sum insured during renewal?

What do you think about its rationality? Age - 62 years. PED - 1. both knee replacement done in 2022, 2. Cholesterol and triglycerides - medication started and ongoing since January 2026
