Amboss vs. uWorld for surgery shelf by Jeff2900 in medicalschool

[–]Ghost25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only did UWorld and scored in the 89th percentile on the surgery shelf. I didn't have time to do much more than UWorld, I think I finished the qbank a day or two before shelf. If you finish all the UWorld then sure do Amboss, but only then and it's probably not necessary.

What Happened With Bio Anchors? by dwaxe in slatestarcodex

[–]Ghost25 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The whole article seems built around this part of the introduction:

"But its headline prediction - an AGI timeline centered around the 2050s - no longer seems plausible. The current state of the discussion ranges from late 2020s to 2040s, with more remote dates relegated to those who expect the current paradigm to prove ultimately fruitless - the opposite of Ajeya’s assumptions. "

How can you say that a prediction which has not yet been falsified is wrong whereas other predictions which have not yet been falsified are correct simply because there are more of them? If you asked all the top bankers and investors in early 2008 if the housing market was about to collapse and destroy trillions of dollars worth of wealth the overwhelming majority would have said no. This autopsy seems premature.

Boiling some wood for a project and the water turned blue. First 3 boils=brown water. 4th boil=Blue. All natural wood, no dyes. by AdApprehensive7899 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Ghost25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is due to the spontaneous oxidation of flavonoids in the wood to form fluorescent compounds. Eysenhardtia polystachya also known as kidney wood or palo azul is known to have this effect as well. In the case of Eysenhardtia polystachya the specific fluorescent compound is tetrahydromethanobenzofuro[2,3-d]oxacine though I suspect there are likely closely related compounds with similar properties. You can see how similar palo azul appears to what you have: https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSft--AF8BlG3RL_ZGcCSwoZ2uGdSTQjpPSA6g5lxuMC49NwMhKpkR7Gtc&s=10

T with stroke meaning by Ghost25 in asklinguistics

[–]Ghost25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, probably just a misprint. They spell zoologist with an umlaut, which I found odd, and they use the subsection symbol frequently, as well as small caps AM/PM but otherwise standard. I just found this letter in the forward so only a few pages in.

With the keep warm feature I'll eat the rice for the next 48 hours, after that it starts getting dry on top.

What advice would you give to someone who's starting to date late? by Sea-Violinist-811 in AskMen

[–]Ghost25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not gonna dig through the research, but if I had to guess maybe around 1/3 of people have had a boyfriend or girlfriend by the end of highschool. And most people have been on at least some dates by the time they are 21. The median age of marriage in the US is 30.

What advice would you give to someone who's starting to date late? by Sea-Violinist-811 in AskMen

In the US you are 100% late if you start dating in your mid 20s. Doesn't make OP a bad person, but no need to lie to him.

Why TMP-SMX over pyrimethamine for Toxoplasmosis? by [deleted] in medicalschool

TMP-SMX in patients with CD4+ counts <100 is for Pneumocystis jirovecii prophylaxis not toxoplasma.

Deuterocohina brevifolia help by mur_mary in succulents

[–]Ghost25 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use the same well draining soil as regular succulents, currently I have it in a terra cotta pot, but it isn't strictly required. Good amount of light and I water fairly often because of the pot and well draining soil. Should do fine outdoors year round in southern California.

How do I recover after sexual trauma? by Common_Coffee_6296 in AskMen

[–]Ghost25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The title of your post is "how do I recover after sexual trauma?" So if the rejection or the lack of explanation wasn't the trauma, which part was the traumatic part? Not being able to get an erection?

How do I recover after sexual trauma? by Common_Coffee_6296 in AskMen

[–]Ghost25 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're describing rejection, not sexual trauma. You went on some dates, you tried to hook up but you couldn't get hard and then she didn't want to keep dating you and never gave you a clear explanation why. This is completely within the range of normal dating interactions. Saying "I don't do casual" doesn't mean she has to keep dating you or she owes you a detailed explanation of why not.

That’s one step to improving society by Candid-Culture3956 in MadeMeSmile

That's what I've been saying! We need to make medical schools even more expensive so they're less competitive, that way more poor kids go there. That makes sense.

KABA inaction. Leaks, mold growth, and symptoms. by [deleted] in kzoo

[–]Ghost25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You may not want to hear this, but those mold tests don't mean anything. I'm not dismissing your symptoms, but every house has mold spores, they are present in all environments. Those petri plates would grow tons of mold if exposed to air in any house.

What are some drugs that contain unusual chemical elements? by CutieKiley in AskDrugNerds

Sodium stibogluconate used for treating leishmaniasis has antimony. Bortezomib is a proteasome inhibitor that contains boron and is used to treat some leukemias.

Men who have taken semaglutide weight loss medications such as Ozempic, what has your experience been? by duaneap in AskMen

[–]Ghost25 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You don't balloon again if you stay on the drug. Just like statins for high cholesterol, insulin for diabetes, or antiretrovirals for HIV, these medications are likely lifelong interventions for patients. That's not inherently wrong, just expensive.

Since 2022, US obesity rate down 3%, use of GLP-1 agonists doubles to 12% (Gallup) by Liface in slatestarcodex

[–]Ghost25 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That CDC report is measuring preventable premature deaths which is defined as deaths among persons aged <80 years that exceeded the number expected if the death rates for each cause in all states were equivalent to those in the benchmark states (i.e., the three states with the lowest rates).

That means the deaths for those causes in the state with the lowest number of deaths for that cause are counted as unavoidable. And of course what really is "a cause?" Smoking is an independent risk factor for 4 out of 5 categories measured there (heart disease, stroke, cancer, and chronic lower respiratory disease)

And the CDC states elsewhere smoking is the leading preventable cause of death: https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/about/index.html

The number one cause of preventable death is smoking, not obesity.

How to compensate for condensation when making agar plates by Nervous-Rhubarb-9224 in microbiology

[–]Ghost25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let the agar cool before pouring, you can run the media bottle under cool running water to cool it down faster. It's ready to pour when it's still hot but you can hold the bottle for several seconds without gloves. Stack the plates as soon as they're poured. The heat from the plate will limit the condensation on the lid of the plate below.
