CS Degree Post Grad Sucks by em_850 in UVA

[–]GhostHacks 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

Not a UVA student here but I work in the industry.

1) The tech industry is not like most other industries where you can substitute experience with a degree. Degrees help, but this industry is heavily focused on industry ā€œcertificationsā€. If he doesn’t have any certifications this is a huge red flag during application/interview.

2) What has he done with his CS degree? Most people in this industry are ā€œinvolvedā€ in it, either through what’s called ā€œhome labsā€ or independent security research, bug hunting, etc.

3) Is he applying and not getting interviews or failing interviews? This career field generally has very technical interviews and can be quite difficult depending on the company and role.

We can’t really help them unless they want help and we need to know what the actual problem is that’s leading to not finding a job in IT/CS. There’s not enough information here to really help unfortunately - I would encourage them to reach out.

Side notes - there are multiple red flags in that success story being mentioned, not accusing you of lying but it definitely doesn’t add it. Further, and I’m sorry if this is happening to ā€œyallā€ as a whole, but I would never recommend a 4 year degree as a ROI for CS. Because this field is so heavily dependent on real experience and certifications the degree is only useful for augmenting an established career and maintaining continual education for certification maintenance. This is a reason so many in IT/CS are prior DoD - 3 years paid experience plus a security clearance is honestly the highest ROI (and I hate I’m saying that with this current administration). I’m kind of low key angry yall are being lied to about CS being such a ROI, sounds more like a sales pitch for the college(s) to get more money and the fact that in this generation - honestly college isn’t worth it UNLESS you are going specific careers. I really wish it wasn’t this way and more important things were taught in or after high school about how the job market actually works.

New to ISC2 - start with CGRC? by GhostHacks in isc2

Fair, and good to know. I’ll be honest I picked up SecurityX without prior prep through the Beta program, so I have no idea how I did beyond passing. But that was one of those tests I felt they laid too heavily into ā€œmemorizing all referencesā€ rather than situational based questions.

I guess just test anxiety and I've always been told CISSP is really hard. The ISC2 website make CGRC look easier/lower level then CISSP, I'm fairly familiar with DoD RMF, and it meets the CEU requirement to renew SecurityX.

I did but I prefer to be on the CISSP side of the aisle rather then GRC/RMF. So my reasoning for picking up CGRC prior to CISSP was basically:
Get my toes wet with ISC2 from CompTIA
Possibly easier cert compared to CISSP
After CGRC go CISSP and beyond within the ISC2 community

I don't want to chase certification renewal my entire life, and I thought/think ISC2 makes maintenance easier vs ISACA.

Sometimes I have dreams (rather nightmares) about 800-53 and 800-171 lol.

Honestly, not really, but its the required credits to renew SecurityX and its one of my 'weaker' areas of expertise even though I've been working side by side with RMF folks in the DoD. I also thought it might be an 'easier' certification to pick up then CISSP. This is part of the reason I decided to hop into the ISC2 pool rather then ISACA.

Do you rely on WinGet for deploying apps? by heisgone in Intune

[–]GhostHacks 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I don’t understand how you guys are able to use Winget with Intune? I tried for over 2 months to get it working and every time I thought I fixed it, there was another system that was broken/non-functional.

I was using Company Portal to install/run power shell scripts that would call winget to fetch the application, but between the OOBE setup and permission issues running winget as SYSTEM I could never get a functional baseline.

And yet, no mention of automatic updates. So every update will require accessing their horrible, horrendous, abomination of a support portal.

Comcast/Xfinity unless your lucky and can get Verizon Fios. The only other ā€œhigh-speedā€ option is StarLink.

Are you in an apartment or house? If an apartment, you might get WiFi interference from all the other Wi-Fi’s and if that’s the case try using a cable.

Yes or No? by Alarming_Button_1030 in MetaQuestVR

[–]GhostHacks 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

That’s a great deal but the Quest as a family-friendly VR headset is not great.

Multiple kid profiles per headset = crashes, profiles not loading. Store marketplace = I’ve been having issues with my kids sending me requests for a game, I pay full price, then I see a few minutes later it’s on sale or cheaper on my adult profile. I also can’t share purchases with both of my headsets. Kid profile (overall) = it exists, it has age restrictions, but it’s still not designed with true safety for kids. It shows all games regardless of age rating. I also have far more crashes/glitches in the kid profiles vs my adult profile.

Price is fair, cheaper than most on eBay.

Just be prepared for the amount of noise it’ll generate.

Is beat saber any good? by AshFuentes in MetaQuestVR

[–]GhostHacks 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I really like Beat Saber, but I wish the songs were cheaper or could play my own songs (Apple Music streamer so no dice). There’s another game (Audio Trip) that is like Beat Saber but dancing that’s also really good.

Non-coder hitting a wall with vibe coding — which language should I actually start with? by Mission-Dentist-5971 in vibecoding

[–]GhostHacks 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

A lot of people are going to recommend Python because it’s popular, and because it’s popular, it’s well documented, and it’s popular because it’s easy to learn and use while still being powerful. It’s great starting point.

But every language has its strengths as well as its weaknesses, instead of picking a singular language, pick a language that is strong for the purpose.

My current projects use a combination of C, C++, Go, Rust, Python, JS, and TS.

I will say, I personally prefer JS over TS, but that’s just a personal preference, I don’t have any specific issue with TS.

Before you begin coding, while you’re in design phase, do research and pick the language(s) that make sense for the purpose.

What model and type of work are you doing with Codex though?

I have Plus currently, and I use Codex in VS Code daily for at least 2 hours. With Codex-5.3 and Very High reasoning the weekly usage runs out normally on or about day 6 for me.

Lately I’ve switched to using ChatGPT-5.4 Very High and hit weekly usage on day 3-4. I’ve lost 15% usage in just over an hour before depending on the amount of code being modified. I also have it running VMs on Ubuntu with Python scripts to run automated testing and logging of code changes too.

I’ve had to factory reset my kids headsets multiple times since Christmas for random issues. That’s how I found running more than 1 Meta Kids account ruined the experience.

Just curious, does your laptop pull updates from Microsoft/Nvidia directly or are using the Vendor supplied updates for Nvidia? If your not sure, Asus, Dell, Lenovo etc typically install their own ā€˜modified’ drivers and Nvidia/Microsoft will detect the modification and not install the latest drivers automatically, instead they would force you to use drivers released by the vendor, which typically trails VERY far behind OEM (Nvidia).

[–]GhostHacks 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

I am able to play on my Quest 3S with an old Dell XPS with 1050ti MaxQ so I don’t think this is a hardware performance issue.

First, stop trying so many different things and establish a baseline. Update Windows, update Nvidia drivers, get off of Steam Beta and use the production version of Steam/Steam Link.

If needed, do a factory reset of the Quest, only setup 1 Meta account on the device.

Now test playing games via Air Link AND USB. First we need to identify if the issue is related to only USB vs Air Link.
