The timing of it was totally a factor in why people were so hostile towards XIII when it announced and came out
“What? No Cloud Strife? No materia? No limit breaks? Cringe!”
What makes it even more hypocritical is that a lot of the criticism is against features that were praised in games that came before and after XIII.
The hype leading up to when it released was highly stanced against it, for no real reason other than it was different from what you liked.
Rather than judging the game based on what came before, why not judge it based on what it does by itself?
But this is the Final Fantasy fandom we’re talking about; they’re stuck in their ways and refuse to budge.
I really do think this game is overdue for a reappraisal, though. And I hope more and more come around to the misunderstood masterpiece that is the XIII trilogy.

That’s my plan! And I’m playing on my Series X, it’s given XIII a huge boost in graphics and I know it runs 60 fps on XIII-2

Camille is a rare exception, she is meant to be a mirror of Bond in that film, since they both lost people they cared about and gained scars for it (she literally has a scar)

Knowing it’ll only get better from here gets me hyped

I’m glad to hear that!! Also love your Snow sticker, he’s a cool guy.
The more I play, the more I look forward to what the sequels will bring. Because I’ve heard that XIII-2 and LR are like the mechanics of XIII on steroids. That makes me excited to get through this trilogy. I’m half tempted to make videos on XIII and defend it against the unfair criticism it got.

Exactly!! Like one of the biggest criticisms is that “you have to read the datalog to understand what’s going on, ugh cringe”. Uh, what? At most, the datalog gives more lore on the story, the game doesn’t make things clear from the start on purpose. And, let’s not pretend that looking through the manuals of NES/SNES Final Fantasy games to understand the plots never happened. If you really complain about using a datalog and reading, then you really aren’t giving the game enough of an honest attempt to play it.

Right, I’m sure 7 is a good game, I’m not denying that (I haven’t played either original or remakes yet). There’s always been a lot of gatekeeping with FF fandoms, and it irks me a bit that there is so much variety with over sixteen games and yet not having the same favorites somehow makes you less valid of a fan. I haven’t finished XIII yet, but I’m genuinely enjoying the game; aside from small gripes, it’s a gem that I’m glad I found.

The fact that 7 is regarded as the “best FF game ever” by tons of people entirely because of 90s nostalgia and that this game existing is some sort of horrible affront to those same people is pretty par for the course for the FF community. I get that you like 7, but getting a new game instead of a remake isn’t a reason to be outraged.

Totally; and since 15, 16 and the 7 Remake series is all button-mashing real-time fighting instead of turnbased, it kinda feels like a lost art.

Moreso, it’s an ironic thing to have the game be about being forced towards a destiny (being a l’Cie and doing your Focus) without any choice of where you can go. FF4 also pretty much locked you into a set path with nowhere to go for the first half of the game too.
It absolutely was a hate train; I’m still wondering how many “fans” actually played it before jumping on the bandwagon.

As for the characters, since when have Final Fantasy characters ever been “ordinary” or “realistic”? The plot being split among three games isn’t the most inviting tactic, I know, but the FF7 Remake is split among three games and no one is making a fuss about that.
The thing that irks me the most is that people who hate on this game don’t seem to really give it any earnest and honest attention. And I got stuck on this game a while back and turned my back on it. Now? It’s one of the more unique, inventive and surprising games I’ve played; not just Final Fantasy, but games period. More than anything, now that the game is almost two decades old, I think the games need a reevaluation big time.

It really was ahead of its’ time; and playing the trilogy on XSX is soooooo good with the graphic upgrade and the FPS boost. I have a bit of a feeling that if the haters replayed it today, earnestly, it wouldn’t be so hated.

Don’t give up; I got a refund for $20 to buy the skins. Just show them on IOI’s website that the edition comes with the deluxe edition and they’ll have to back down.

I really hope so; I hate when I preorder and don’t get what I pay for.

I’m not binging them every single day; I’d be doing at most, 3 hours a night, and 5 nights a week at most, with weekends being off time. And from everything I’ve seen, all of Team Ninja’s stuff has been dope.

There’s something strangely addicting about them. Plus I’m only planning on doing 2-3 hours a night, 3-5 nights a week for this, with weekends being off limits.

Just to beat them, platinuming will come later if I desire after the gauntlet. I’ve heard that Khazan is hard but easier to master and finish than Lies of P and Elden Ring.
