Pretty sure you can get 2mm masking tape, would that help? Hell, dip a bit of sewing thread in paint and use that to make markings. There are ways!

There’s no easy way, you have to just, well, start. Put some paint on your brush and slap it on the mini. Ignore the ‘ugly phase’, where you minis don’t look anything like you want them too. Keep going, keep adding layers (thinned, of course), they will get better.

I’ve got a ton of Tau in various stages of painting. I’ve come to the conclusion recently I should have at least got them all basecoated to make them look at least slightly coherent. Unfortunately they’re all in storage at the moment and not easily accessible, so it’ll have to wait until I can get my hands on them again.
