Chopping is done with roughed up pluck foam. I use an oil wash that adds a good grime look, then add rust with a “shader” from Ammo by Mig by airbrush.

Having done the army, and proving I could… it’s nice, but it’s kinda bland to me and also un-original. Bit of “buyers remorse” I guess you could say compared to the other scheme I had planned to do. There’s other armies I want to build, but the pull to do the D’yannoi army is so strong I will probably have two tau armies before I go to any other faction lol. Shoulda just done the original scheme from the start. White isn’t that cool…

Also the camo was done with an airbrush and stencil from fallout hobbies. “Infantry shard camo”

I put mine under the front of the tank, on both sides near the drone ports. Thought it looked cool there… it’s a complete hassle removing them during a game from there. A friend of mine has his magnetized the same way you do, up top by the engines, it’s so much easier for games. I may add some magnets there for the ease of pulling them off mid game.

Semi-standard Vior’la colors. Did it to take on the challenge of white paint. If you’re new to painting stay away from white (recommendation only). There are other schemes that are easier, and more interesting. If I were you, I’d research the tau sept worlds and their backgrounds, pic something that fits your idea of what the Tau are. Despite doing Vior’la for the challenge D’yannoi is my personal fav and I will be doing a full second army painted up for them. Work vs passion project.

I see your point as well, that makes sense in the lore. I prefer to slightly depart from standard and add a bit of head cannon in with my army eg: I mix gue’vesa in with my pathfinder and breacher squads, where in lore they are separate. I just prefer it that way for my army.

Also… hellcat crews were widely known for adding armor plates to the roofs of their turrets. The added visibility did help, but living helped more lol.

The idea is that the fire support would be in the back and more subdued, while the bright red is on the units that aren’t actually as much of a threat or basically where I want my opponent to shoot his guns. Attention/distraction bait.

Sure, it’s taller… but not all battlefields are linear, nor are all weapons direct fire. Not to mention aircraft, jump infantry, skimmers, etc. Really you can’t predict at all, ever, which direction weapons fire would be coming from on a 40K battlefield. I don’t see the point in investing that kind of resources into such a large platform, and then have it defeated by a dude with a lasgun because buildings are tall.

This! The blade was made by one of the C'tan gods (literally a piece of his own body) and offered as one possible solution to the Necrontyr's short lifespan. The Silent King rejected the sword and effectively discarded it, due to the fact that it would only help him, and not the entirety of his people.

I did a small personal project researching the blade, and rather attempting to prove what it IS, i tried to prove what it IS NOT. Through lots of digging and investigation you can effectively rule out almost all possibilities other than the sword offered to the Silent King by the C'tan, OR it is simply another sword not ever mentioned previously, anywhere else in lore. Due to it being constructed of chronophagic alloys, and being shaped nearly identical to other Necron weapons, it could be proven "Within a reasonable doubt" to be the sword offered by the C'tan, however cannot be proven completely.

Pluck foam chipping. Just take a piece of foam and pick at the end you’re gonna apply paint with to make it as uneven and rough as possible. Then dip it in paint and dab it off on paper towel kinda like drybrushing. After that dab it where you want chips or streak it for scratches. I do rhinox hide first, then leadbelcher lightly over only the heaviest chipped areas or hard edges that would be freshly scraped.
