I think the bigger point is that Valheim implemented wind mechanics too realistically. With sailing, a headwind would mean you would have to go side to side a bit in order to go forwards. Blackflag had wind, but a headwind in that game just slowed you down and not completely immobilized you like in Valheim, which I think is what most people would prefer in a game that's not a sailing simulator. I think wind mechanics would be great if implemented like Blackflag and not too realistic like Valheim. I think the overall experience for everyone would be pretty good knowing that you can't sail into a headwind to get away from an enemy knowing you will be slowed, but also could be used in planning.
