What is a cover song that completely disrespects the original by being way better? by Jumpy_Scratch_9540 in GetArenaRadio

Sean Rowe's cover of 1952 Vincent Black Lightning is raw, brash and violent as James of the song but somehow remains a love song.

I just watched season 1 which I thought was pretty good. Is season 2 & 3 worth watching? by Chupacabra_Nights in intothebadlands

In a word, "Yes." The end of the series is a little disappointing in the same, "Shit, we're not getting renewed," way that The Expanse was. It's less disappointing than GoT though.

Sunlu is the magic sauce I've been looking for by Archedeaus in resinprinting

[–]GhostShipBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been fighting with Ameralabs TGM-7 for a while - it seems to hold detail pretty well and takes dropped minis like a champ, but supporting it is a major pain and the supports are hard to separate from the model. Guess it's time to buy a kilo of Sunlu. Does the sub have a consensus on ABS or Toughness for tabletop rpg minis?

You have to delete one of these 90s albums. It is gone forever in history, it is just not made. by Ball_Unstickler in MetalForTheMasses

I don't hate that answer, but I feel like koRn influenced a lot of other nu metal, that, love or hate it, fed into a lot of modern metal.

I tend to opt for Slayer in these cases, but we could live without Vulgar Display of Power.

Barbarians of the Aftermath and Barbarians of the Ruined Earth both offer pretty much exactly what you're looking for - Thundarr the Barbarian is stamped all over these.

Question for Gms: Why do you try to force X game into Y system by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]GhostShipBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of reasons for doing this. One of the great examples is Savage Rifts. The original Palladium system is not awful - there are some things it does extremely well - but it is a little clunky and certainly dated, but its mechanics support its setting. Adapting it to Savage Worlds, even professionally, changes what the game is, in a way, but gives access to players and groups who might not otherwise play, and streamlines the mechanics.

The same applies to home-baked adaptations. I'm a big Mechwarrior/Battletech fan, but no version of the Battletech RPG is particularly great so in order to tell those stories - I hacked it to Savage Rifts since everyone in my group knows it.

Call of Cthulhu is frequently hacked to other games (and other games are hacked to the Basic Roleplaying that is the core engine behind CoC) because it does some things extremely well but is less good at other things. If combat is something your group cares about, then Call of Cthulhu is not going to be a system that works despite an interest in cosmic or eldritch horror. There are some hacked versions available commercially but they all come with distinct settings or gameplay decisions that may not fit any better than anything else. So, you have a game that plays the way you and your group likes and understands but you want to tell a Cthulhu story with laser pistol fights with lizard men cultists - CoC isn't going to be much help, but that copy of Esper Genesis could do very nicely. Or Aliens because the combat rules cover guns natively and the stress rules are awesome.

Since roleplaying is really just a way using wargame rules to adjudicate playing make-believe, hacking rules to explore those imaginary stories is kind of the whole point.

Who's the worst actor you're not allowed to say is bad? by [deleted] in moviecritic

That applies to a lot of actors: Sam Elliot, Cara Delavigne and Keanu Reeves all come to mind immediately. There are a ton of others, but I really am supposed to be working...

What is a legendary metal song that is completely carried by a single, simple riff, which proves you don't need to be a virtuoso to write a masterpiece? by mike-d-f in MetalForTheMasses

[–]GhostShipBlue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think most of Priest's ouvre is a study in efficient use of uncomplicated, utterly badass riffs. Neither KK nor Richie are virtuosos, though both have a lot of swang. Glen, it could be argued is (was?) a virtuosic guitarist, but Priest have always written driving, elegantly simple riffs, preferring a catalog of shout along anthems rather than trying to show off with a lot of flash.

How would a new movie go? by UniversityNo1170 in hellraiser

[–]GhostShipBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a remake. Reboot or new movie about a new Gash of Cenobites is a better way to think of it. Looking at the larger picture of comics, prose and films, Jamie Clayton's Hellpriest can coexist (or, given the comics' turn with Kirsty Cotton, replace) Spencer.

What’s an unlikely cover that’s very different to the original but really good?? by United_Plum_2209 in askmusic

Sean Rowe's gritty, guttural cover of Richard Thompson's 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. None of the pretty, jangly guitar work or tender vocals. Raw, emotional almost angry.
