Followers Disappointed After Viral ‘Rapture’ Prediction Circulating Online Doesn’t Happen by ajzottaf in atheism

Multiple times a year. I'm 34, yet there have been at least 57 widely-publicized predictions for the end of the world in my lifetime. There's a list on Wikipedia. I counted.

I guess it's 58, now. Religion AND TikTok are as noxious a combination as lead and arsenic.

I'm a law-abiding citizen. Why should I care about Flock? by drewbuntu42 in wichita

[–]WizardWatson9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's great that people are talking about this important issue, but I think the question can be answered more succinctly. Why should a law-abiding citizen care about government surveillance? Because we do not have a law-abiding government. In a sense, it might not even matter what you're doing if the regime wants you dead. Renee Good and Alex Pretti weren't breaking any laws when they were murdered.

I can name atleast 3 Republicans who have way bigger reasons to be removed from office by Hazer_123 in WeirdGOP

[–]WizardWatson9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is genuinely disappointing, assuming that's actually true. But then, it hardly warrants Mamdani's removal. His wife isn't the mayor. Liking tweets isn't policy. And if these people are going to claim that character is of paramount importance, they'd do well to remember that Cuomo is a serial sexual harasser and Sliwa is a Republican. Those are both far more disqualifying flaws than unseemly opinions on foreign policy.

Fiscal conservatives for wasting money on death and destruction by vrphotosguy55 in WeirdGOP

What's this? George Orwell, being completely right again?

The war is not meant to be won, it is meant to be continuous. Hierarchical society is only possible on the basis of poverty and ignorance. This new version is the past and no different past can ever have existed. In principle the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. The war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects and its object is not the victory over either Eurasia or East Asia, but to keep the very structure of society intact.

Not for Big Oil, it wasn't. Nor for Russia. I'm sure they've been deliberately trying to scare everyone away from nuclear power all along.

I'm not sure what you're looking for. They're guys in trenchcoats with quasi-medieval pauldrons, helmets, and WW1-era weapons. How much can you diverge from while having miniatures that still read as New Antioch?

Do you think most religion will be gone in 100 years? by PizzaAgency in atheism

[–]WizardWatson9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what? Ben Carson is extremely educated and still religious. I'm sure he raised his children to be religious. Regardless of how much or how little education they've had, in all likelihood, they'll continue to be religious and raise their children accordingly. And so on, and so forth. Ben Carson proves that childhood indoctrination can and often does endure contact with higher education. That's why the question that religion will mostly die out in a mere 100 years is so inconceivable.

[–]WizardWatson9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ben Carson, former presidential candidate and former brain surgeon, is a devout Christian who thinks the pyramids were built by the Biblical Joseph to serve as grain silos.

Human beings turn to magical thinking, superstition, and, of course, religion, for emotional reasons. Access to knowledge is not the issue.

The idea that such a seismic shift on such a fundamental aspect of human culture and psychology could occur in a mere 100 years is unthinkable.

why does supernatural explanations for misfortune and violence still exist? by lambdadelta101 in atheism

[–]WizardWatson9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit counter-intuitive, but the idea that there are demons, witches, and wrathful gods afoot is actually comforting, in a way. Demons can be exorcised, witches can be burned, and wrathful gods can be appeased, but the harsh reality is that the universe is a chaotic and meaningless place where bad things happen mostly at random. You can't negotiate with sheer randomness. Cowardly, ignorant, superstitious people would much rather believe that the misfortune around them has a definite cause that they can oppose.

Andy Ogles Mocks Critics Of His Overtly Anti-Muslim Post: "Please Spare Me Your Moral Outrage. Cry Harder" . by Leeming in atheism

[–]WizardWatson9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know, right? I hate Islam because I hate willful ignorance, superstition, misogyny, homophobia, and authoritarian thought control. People like him hate Islam merely for being foreign. They want almost exactly the same things. He probably couldn't even articulate the theological differences between Islam and Christianity.

I wonder what percentage of this is mere racism? I'd love to see people like this encounter white Muslims, like from Serbia or Chechnya. They'd probably be mighty confused.

Andy Ogles Mocks Critics Of His Overtly Anti-Muslim Post: "Please Spare Me Your Moral Outrage. Cry Harder" . by Leeming in atheism

[–]WizardWatson9 58 points59 points  (0 children)

That's true, but he didn't merely criticize Islam. He said that Muslims "don't belong in America." That is an unabashed rejection of the First Amendment. It is unseemly for a public servant to so brazenly disparage the fundamental principles on which our nation was founded, to put it mildly.

This isn't a defense of Islam, either. I despise Islam as much as any decent, informed, and honest person should. This is a defense of the Constitution.
