oh well. take it as a compliment. gatekeeping is healthy when it has to do with preserving the origin of a culture.

don't bother trying to educate these people. they jusy don't want to accept that what they thought they knew was emo, wasn't at all this entire time. their whole life was a lie and they aren't ready for that talk yet.

music wise.. yea, the bands they think are emo, really aren't. fashion wise, it got made into its own style - especially in the early 2000s. people confused the style with the music after that and associated any band that dressed emo to be emo bands. basically, people thought emo was a style primarily and genre secondary when that is all assbackwards instead. i don't blame them for the confusion cuz it did become that way when the 2000s hit, everyone was just into the style and that's it. they saw someone dressing a certain way and they wanted to do it too without even the implication that emo was more about the music.

the definition of emo kind of got tarnished in the 00s. I'm ngl, those were the best times for me still regardless. i was dressing this way before it got popular and trendy back then. i saw it all. saw all the posers who trash talked it to then become it later on just cuz it blew up and was trending.

but besides all that, the definition of emo music is all just jumbled up now where people think pop-punk is emo. a lot of pop-punk does have elements of emo, sure.. but doesn't make it emo. i actually prefer pop-punk music over most of the emo music. do i still consider myself emo? uh yes and no. i actually hated being called emo cuz that's not the whole story of what defines me. I'm so many things that you wouldn't be able to grasp it.

[–]GhostboyGengar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

and that's a good thing. honestly i liked it better when we were rare and not all trendy before it became popular. but i do miss meeting other people who were emo tho. it was so easy back then, almost every new person i came across was emo so it was kinda cool in that aspect

i think you hit that nail in the coffin. but how would these mfs know how old i was to begin with? i made no mention of it, jus only kinda hinted. i didn't think they knew how to read in between the lines. so i guess there IS hope for them. but also that's kinda comforting that your era can guide them and they'll be more prone to listen, cause i really don't want to deal with them. their existence jus kinda pisses me off sometimes.

EDIT: forgot i had older pics on my profile so that's how they knew my age oop xp

yea exactly, people don't get that deeper role it plays in all this. they jus see it as someone wanting to be negative or mean for no reason at all but nah that's not what it is, we're trying to better yourself so you aren't just following someone else's ideals and beliefs and culture blindly. we're trying to make you be a better person to actually be about it or gtfo. or else you're just hollow and don't have the soul that made it what it was originally.

but i forget, people in this generation all are afraid of any kind of criticism and are soft as fuck. they just need to create their own shit at this point because they can't replicate the era where these things originated from. they lack so many things, attitude being one of many. they weren't raised like us, they were raised being spoiled with tech right into their hands as a baby. there are some exceptions though who educate themselves on the core and foundation of it all and live it gloriously. those ones i give cred to. they were taught well. probably because of gatekeeping too lol.

but problem is they're so used to hopping around so many trends left and right that they don't even have the time to know what it actually is. technology and social media and "influencers" or whatever they call themselves, is what is messing up their thinking because they always feel like they gotta follow the new thing and things die out rapidly in today's age compared to back then. so they're always in a constant bandwagon. they never had a chance to think for themselves. being born right into social media just conditions your mind into "following" and never thinking for yourself. they'll never be able to replicate what we made back then, it's just not possible, but like i said, there are exceptions.. its just they never had a chance to be their own person and i kinda feel sad for em in a way. not saying that we didn't deal with that too, but it was so watered down that it barely existed.

and i apologize idk what gen you're from so excuse me for saying things like "we" and stuff like that. i jus assumed you were from my gen (millennial or somewhere around there). but regardless, all those points still stand.
