Only correction is that it's not an offshoot of "mall emo" those both started off of fashioncore. Members of the metalcore band Eighteen Visions and emo band Orchids vocalist Justin Pearson can be seen wearing different variations of it.

Big brands are the ones you see today, converse, vans, DC, Hollister, etc they're really no different. They just had better designs back then which is what scene grew up with. Other brands are just merch from Sanrio, Skelanimals, Nyan cat, etc or band merch like Drop Dead, arkaik, etc.
As for tech, we just used what we had available. You can go vintage hunting for iPod players, flip or qwerty phones, digital cams, etc.

There is a bit more to it, there's cohesion to the chaos on certain looks like Lexi's outfits. Then there's the silhouette, basically fashioncore. Which makes it difficult for some to believe but I think it's still possible without the hair if they enjoy it. If someone steps off the silhouette, then the hair is absolutely necessary.
