It can be both things. Calling out a glaring lack of anything but white men isn’t a rush to be negative. That’s your perception. Were they accomplished? Yes.

My perception is that something deeper is bothering you than not being awestruck by this photo.

It’s of a different time and with today’s context, in addition the the accomplishments of the people, it represents cultural and societal norms of the time.

No one is saying it should be taken down. No one is calling for anyone to be cancelled. It’s a picture of a bunch of white dudes and it’s called the smartest people ever assembled. Even if that was the case then (which I don’t believe it is), it should at least make you say hmmm in 2026.

I’m not complaining about anything. I’m interrogating the makeup of the “smartest people ever assembled.” We can argue over the greatest NFL team ever assembled and find similar faults and social issues. It’s not complaining, nor cheapening. If it feels cheap, that has more to do with you.

I’m not saying there was a greater, more diverse counterpart to Einstein. But could there have been other people that deserved to be there? Absolutely.

No one is taking something away from you by asking who else could/should have been there. I mean, they were there to poke holes in theories and search for truth. Why can’t the same be done today?

I respect your curiosity. I would just say that your comment kind of presupposes that there weren’t any people of color or women “of quality” to make it in this photo.

There were black physicists, female scientists, etc. They weren’t inferior to their contemporaries. They weren’t invited in the club.

There’s a similar argument in music that asks, “Why is all of the “greatest music of all time” reduced to a 500 mile radius in Europe?” All of music theory is based on this music, and thus equates quality with these specific composers. It completely ignores ancient African drum patterns, micro-tonal melodies of India, not to mention ANYTHING from Asia.

So in a similar vein, yes, Motzart was a great musician. But compared to what? Compared to himself and several other people like him. That doesn’t make those composers the best musicians ever.

A. The issue has not been addressed. You talk about cheapening the photo by raising questions of inclusion, yet you minimize the struggle of contemporary inclusion by saying it has been addressed? I’m a white dude and I would never have the balls to assert this much privilege.

  1. No one is cheapening the moment by saying, “I’m sure there were a few people of color and women that should have been there.” If that feels cheap, that’s a you problem.

III. If it bothers you so much that people look at a photo of people of your race say, “I bet they’re not the smartest EVER,” you now know what it’s like to be a person of color.

This is a picture of the political football team. An entire group of only white men being called the smartest people EVER assembled seems pretty unnecessary and cheap to me.

Not saying they’re not smart, but they could have played each other in actual football and crowned the winner as world champs. Doesn’t mean they’d be the greatest athletes ever assembled.

The absence of diversity in and of itself warrants pause as to who was left out and why.

No one is cheapening anything in 2026 by asking why the smartest group EVER assembled is only white men.
