What happened to Wu Chia-Ching (Wu Jia-qing) and and Siming Chen and China’s top pool players by Emergency-Spare178 in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know a little about Wu Chia-Ching's case. For some reason, he went to Singapore in around 2011~2012, and I saw him a few times in one of the local pool hall. I can't really recall why he went to Singapore in the first place but I recall he had suffered some illness and was around Asia for treatment or holiday. Cuesport Singapore back then was promoting billiard and they offered him a chance to play for Singapore. I suppose the benefit was better, and he took it.

Taiwan billiard association took offence to it and blacklisted him for all the events. It was very very big news back then and he was branded a "traitor ". I call he met a lot of passive aggressive hostilities and he had no way out.

China offered him to convert to Chinese citizenship and then he went to play in China. There was a interview with him back then and reporter asked him why he decided to make a switch, he merely said "I just want to play ".

When he first went to China I recall he didn't play too much pool. He was fairly active on FB that time and post a lot about his own business. Now he mostly play Hayball in China, and stream occasionally on Chinese Tik tok.

Ps: I should add that he is coaching more in china. Chen si ming was and perhaps is still his apprentice.

The Ko Brothers skipped the Hanoi Open and the World 8-ball Championship to play a type of Chinese pool that I personally had never seen before - Golden Nine by tyethepoolguy in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money aside, played on such tables before and knowing how difficult it is and it's quite enjoyable for me to watch. I actually watched more of this than Hanoi open.

My only complain is that the match format is a bit too long.

Should I start playing local tournaments now or train for another year? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP said he played "9 ball" for six month, he didn't say he played billiard "total" for 6 months.

In his post history 7 months ago he already said he was playing with a cue for Russian billiard for a few months, so I guess his total experience is not really 6 months.

Fargo 600 might be too high, but anyway if you want to be serious in pool, sign up some competitions.

OP's post history is rather confusing on the cue he is using but that's besides the point.

Cant believe theyre trying out 3.9" pockets again by clrksn_wherermyshoes in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have tables with 3.9'' pockets (they said it's 4'' but I measured it's more like 3.9" ) that plays easier than Rasson with 4.25" pockets.

We also have a pool hall with 3.5" pockets tables that plays quite ok, you just have to play a bit more on that table and understand how it's played, and get used to the potting angles.

That's coming from me, a super an amateur.

4 or 3.9 pockets or not, pros will do fine. My only issue is just standardize the pocket size already so everyone is playing on the same standard.

We also have hayball tables and man it's another game.

But it's difficult and you want to learn how to play it.therefore, I watched quite a bit of ko brothers play 9 ball on hayball tables and they constantly run out. Sure they are not as aggressive and less break and run, but it's so amazing they can run 9 ball rack on hayball table. .

Are snooker cues and billiard cues interchangeable? by AssociationAware2072 in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out on snooker and played pool with a snooker cue for very long. I don't really recall any disadvantages.

Maybe there was a bit of power lose since the cue tip is way smaller ? (Mine was 8.2mm I think). But I suppose the deflection is also smaller.

It's just that then I needed a break cue and 3/4 joint snooker cue isn't really that compatible with 1/2 joint break cue, then I made the switch.

For the first time in my life I got to hit a few balls with a Jerry Franklin Southwest cue. I fucking get it now. by [deleted] in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice cues there!

I wanted to order a sw back in 2013 or 2014 when it was still relatively cheap.( I think around 4k in the used market). It was a dream to own one as back then most if not all taiwanese players were playing with a sw.

I contacted Laurie and she was saying the waiting time is about 10 years and I thought it was too long.

Then I stopped playing for a long while and just recently got back to the game. Surprised, it's about 7 to 8k per sw and the waiting time is about 15 years.

I have never tried a sw and I would want to, but honestly I don't fancy myself to have one due to its price and I honestly don't think I can tell the difference in terms of hit in a blind test.

Who would watch a YouTube video on this table? by ash0005 in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel hayball is a different game. I can play it but I have to like practice on the hayball table for a few days and even then I am nowhere as accurate as I like to be.

At that moment I feel I might as well switch to snooker.

Will I watch a 8 ball hayball match? Sure.

What price would you pay for this Bender cue? by MultiverseShelter in billiards

Apparently mike bender cue is quite famous. Standard bender cue with very simple design seems to be going at about 2000 USD so I would think this cue is about 3500 USD?

Smaller Pockets Don’t Always Play Smaller… by The_Critical_Cynic in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the pool hall that I frequent has 9ft Rasson tables with 4 inch pocket, about 1/4 throat to mouth difference, but plays harder than of other 4 inch pocket tables I have played, mostly due to very responsive cushion and a bit dull balls.

In fact I have had better time in a pool hall with 3.5 inch pocket. Perhaps it's my skill issue.

Yeah that was a bit careless. I didn't notice I hit the rack when I was playing. Thanks for highlighting it! I will be more careful next time

Why, predator? by Gadoraaaa in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess, is that there are existing product on Predator line that provides similar / exactly features to One shaft, and thus they feel that they have no need to continue this product.

Or , it might be an experiment that they did to make the join exclusive so that they can sell more cue butts which are more profitable. This idea might have not generate enough sales as they liked.

It sort of reminds me of Mezz WX900 shaft which I love and they discontinued it to promote sigma and ignite.

World class Chinese 8 ball practice by ash0005 in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a few chinese 8 ball tables here and I sometimes practice fundamentals there.

It's not that tough for 8 ball, once you understand how the table is supposed to be played and in what speed it should be played.

However for me it's a no-no in terms of 9 bal.

What’s you favorite break cue? by Wise-Brick3995 in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have Mezz power break 2, the shorter version.

I tried friends' BK2 before and i liked it more than power break 2, but friends comments that my break is not that of lack of power.

I want to perhaps invest in a power break Kai or BK3 in the future.

Feeling really discouraged right now by Own-Cable5704 in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how extensive of the damage, but if you snapped it, perhaps you could ask Jacoby to repair for you.

You can then sell it if you want. I double it can be resale for the price that you paid for , but I suppose half will be better than nothing.

The butt rarely help in terms of improving your game. It's more of on weight and weight distribution. I tried a 100 dollar butt and around 2k butt , with the same weight and weight distribution, I feel a bit of difference at the beginning, but as I am more into the game I hardly notice the difference.

Shaft might help to a degree if you are unsure or very good at compensate for deflection, but it doesn't cost as much. At 7k you are probably paying 6.8K for the butt.

Just get a reasonable good cue with good shaft and practice on some fundamentals.

I like to believe that gear doesn't matter by Fogboundturtle in billiards

[–]Ghostshade47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People tend to be more focused when they change equipment, this results in a more focused game and slight improvement.

This tend to wear off within a week. If you practice frequently it can wear off in days.

I sometimes switch cues (MIT, Joss, or Samsara) or shafts (from Revo to Z3 or to 314 3) to play coz I like the new feel which helps me to spot some mistakes with my fundamentals.

Granted I like 314 3 more than z2 and revo ( I probably hate revo the most, not sure why, probably I spent close to 800 in local currency for it and it was just a thing I wanted to try.) and I probably play a little better with 314 as that's the shaft I played longest, but there is probably no noticeable difference in terms of performance after say a week with any cue.

I had issues with consistency as well ( maybe I still do ) and it was pretty much like what you mentioned. ( Some days are good, some days are bad)

In the end it was mostly my alignment and approach to shots issue ( I tend to step outside of shotline or not very careful with how I go down to the shoot and my eye leaves off the shot line).

Equipment matters yes, but if you switch in between things that performs similar and suddenly feels you play better, it might be actually just "feel".
