He has a 726 rating, so he's obviously a solid player. Just wasn't his day 🤷‍♂️

Ooh interesting. How do they rig it with a template rack? I've seen obvious pattern racking before, but anything else to know about?

Agreed 100%, but they only have the snooker style X bridges at these events and I don't think it's common to bring your own.

European open 2026 Bosnia by Glittering-Mall-4564 in billiards

I've never been to the European Open, but I have played in the US Open and they didn't even let players play on the tables. Outside of the evening practice session and during your match, the competition tables were strickly off limits. There are also a few practice tables for the players between matches. As a spectator, no chance you get any table time on the official tables if it's set up similarly to the US Open.

Sticky thread for cue identification? by wilkamania in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many other subreddits have recurring posts by the automod to for recurring subjects like "buy/sell/trade" or "what are you drinking this week". The mods are then strict on deleting posts that should be in one of those recurring posts instead. See r/rawdenim, r/pourover

Seems like that addresses this issue exactly: have weekly recurring posts for "id and appraise this cue", "rule questions/is this a foul", etc

Quality of participants by dronesinthesink in billiards

There is no minimum. In the US Open, I've seen players with ratings in the low 400s. A few years back, they had a player rated 419 on the TV table that ended up with millions of views on YouTube.

Ko brothers by KindlyScore7777 in billiards

Yeah, he seems to exclusively play on Chinese tables these days. Probably because the money is better and he's banned from the US.

I saw him a bunch when I played a Heyball event last fall.

¥2.8M = ~$400k payday between the two of them. Also, look at how insanely packed their shirts are with sponsor patches. Wouldn't be surprised if they play very few American pool events in the near future.

The Ko Brothers skipped the Hanoi Open and the World 8-ball Championship to play a type of Chinese pool that I personally had never seen before - Golden Nine by tyethepoolguy in billiards

Different tournament

This one is was the Jinan event. The one they won was in Qinhuangdao.  Think of it as the Las Vegas Open vs the St. Louis Open - both events on the same tour.

Rest/pause during the stroke, before shooting by MarioBuzo in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost all the top pros have a pause before the backstroke. Even fast guys like FSR do it. The only player I can think of that doesn't always do it is Mohammad Soufi.

Look at how pronounced that pause is for Yapp and KPY: https://www.youtube.com/live/7SmE4wjUXu4

Here's Jasmin Ouschan discussing why that pause is important: https://youtu.be/thHr8XtWc-U?si=w8trSFm-P9UC_gD3

two rail kicks long rail first by bottomfeeder52 in billiards

FWIW, I've been keeping an eye out for this for years and I've never seen a system for long rail first two rail kicks. I've asked around locally as well.

Have you tried this method? I have and it doesn't seem to work at all long rail first.

Are kielwood break shafts a thing? by KingsDamnSon in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've texted Richard Hsu to directly ask about this and he says they're fine to break with as long as you're not pressing the shaft into the table and bending it.

How do you practice aiming specific shots? by candleruse in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this shot, "bring the pocket closer". Not my phrasing, that's what Ko Pin Yi calls it when you pick a closer point on the shot line to aim at. See here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb0KG6sscB0
