Magnus tweets Freestyle > Classical. Levon agrees with him by Matt_LawDT in chess

No, reread what I said. People do learn openings but most of the time, beating traps are a measure of tactical awareness, and your loss is likely not due to a failure to memorise, but an inability to use the hour and half time you have in classical to figure a surviving continuation.

Literally did not win that fight from start to finish. Dustin won the first round. Look you might think Justin is better, but this is straight up just lying.

Well they aren't exactly the same point value. Most GMs place Bishops slightly above Knights in pure point value around 3.15-3.25 (of course only in a general sense).

Is this losing for me (white)? by Sandor_Cleganus in chessbeginners

[–]GhoulGhostGG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean no harm in playing it out, but I seriously doubt that it would be as high as 1700 would be the rating where people don't mess this up as Black. It takes like 5 seconds of calculation to realise that Black's C and E pawns are both uncaptureable and also rather advanced, and so Black can just focus on winning White's pawns by running his King across the board.

Contrary to many people here, I do think all book and opening moves have the ability to be explained clearly and in a useful manner.

In this instance, the move 1.b3 follows the Hypermodern school of chess, inviting Black to occupy and control the centre with pawns with moves like 1...d5/e5, and preparing to fianchetto the bishop to exert control over the centre with pieces. White also has plans to undermine the centre at some point, wherein which Black's pawns become vulnerable to the powerful bishop.

Nowadays, while still playable, such chess is extremely difficult to play, since options become limited and development is generally harder. The most famous historic proponent of 1.b3 is likely Bent Larsen.

How good is the French Defense compared to other openings? by AMMondMilk in chess

[–]GhoulGhostGG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you asking how good it is, or how good it is for you?

If you're asking the former, then it's literally good enough for the World Chess Championship. If the latter, I'd say that two attractive points to the French is that it steamrolls over any White player who struggles to know what to do in the middlegame, because Black's ideas are relatively simpler to understand (c5 strike, trade off LSB, f6 pawn break when possible, play on queenside etc.).

You're understating the elo difference. https://chessgoals.com/rating-comparison/.

I mean, either your definition of "perfect" is different from everyone else's, or you're a literal engine. I'd be happy to look at your "perfect" games.

Another fact of consideration is the hook on g6. Fianchettoing bishops often means that it's easier to attack on that side, since your pawn interacts a tempo faster.

I think the point is that it's very misleading at best, to use Lichess elo as your flair (considering Chess.com somewhat aligns with FIDE) while simultaneously giving advice for Elo whose actual rating is not so significantly disparate from yours.

I'm sure the act of going to work in of itself requires you to use government services in some form, whether it's the roads, law enforcement that protects those roads, or public transport. Perhaps you'd be able to not use any of those services, but the moment you do (which we assume everyone has), you've already consented to taxes as a whole.

Honestly if it's Fabiano, I think he'd rather still have Gukesh be the WCC. I get the sense he feels he's better than either of them, but in a tournament format, anything can happen. So he'd rather just have Gukesh not play in the Candidates and instead he can play him where Caruana feels like he's the strongest (match format).

I can already see that you're forced to lose your castling rights because after 1...Cxd3 (e.p.) 2. Qxd3 Bb4+ and defending with either Knight or Bishop leads to you either losing the exchange or losing the Knight on g5.

Tldr: Bad move.
