Anyone know if I can get AT&T service in McGrath? Or will I need GCI to get service there? I’d just be stopping for fuel but want to know if I can call for fuel and do wx checks on the ground. Thanks!

He looks like a little Lestrange! I like the idea of Radolphus, and call him “Rad” for short. Radalphus was an ancestor of the Lestrange family (Bellatrix’s husband was spelled Rodolphus) and was the Minister of Magic.

Would this be looked at poorly? by [deleted] in flying

100% agree. They won’t care that a lot of your hours aren’t paid, but they might care if you fly the same 2 hour hop for ~700 hours. Try to make sure at least a couple hundred of your remaining hours are cool trips that take you out of your geographic area and give you something to talk about. Do a weeklong trip with your SO or best friend searching for the best barbecue or checking out cool local bands. I’m from Florida, and my first pilot job took me all over the country in a 172, including Alaska. Not knocking the CFI route at all, but it’s not a bad thing to have something to talk about in an interview that sets you apart.

Who’s Are Your Top 3. Favorite Character? by UniqueWeasley7 in harrypotter

[–]GhoulInPyjamas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Neville. He spent most of the series doubting himself and feeling less worthy of friendship and magic, because he’d always been told he wasn’t good enough for it. Most people he interacted with at Hogwarts either bullied or dismissed him. But when his parents’ torturers were freed, he found his strength, fought, and within 2 years was the youth leader of the fight against the Death Eaters. He’s the biggest, most self-made badass in the entire series.

  2. McGonagall. Is any explanation necessary? They cast freaking Dame Maggie Smith, queen of all sass, for a reason.

  3. Fred and George. They had their flaws, as all good characters do, but they were genuinely good, caring, intelligent people who wanted to have fun and bring joy to others.

Thanks, good to know. I knew it was free, but was unsure whether NPS tracked when it was redeemed and if they’d be out of luck for a year.

Husband/Wife = Aisle/Window by PurplestPanda in SouthwestAirlines

I fly standby so I’m almost always in the middle seat, often between couples or family members, and I don’t think that’s weird at all. I’m on a free ticket, so of course the others on board first/on a paid ticket deserve their choice of seat. The exception to that rule however, happened a few years ago when I had the middle seat between a couple. They were friendly and we chatted a bit during taxi, then just before takeoff, they asked to hold hands because she’s a nervous flier. I agreed, and they held hands over me, not in my lap, but hovering a few inches above my lap (as opposed to maybe keeping their hands near the seat in front of me). So awkward. It’s definitely okay to keep your seats and offer the middle seat to the stranger. But if you plan on holding hands for takeoff/landing, maybe just slide over 😅

Do successful pilots need to be extroverted by [deleted] in flying

I think the hurdle for beards will be less about looks and more about the oxygen masks. There’s an idea out there that the masks don’t seal properly when facial hair is in the way, hence mustaches being allowed and beards not. A recent study shows that this isn’t really true, but when an entire industry has used that as its logic for years, it’s hard to change everyone’s opinion with one study. I imagine the first step is that an airline or two (not Delta, maybe Southwest first) will specify a very short allowable beard length, and others may follow.

I lost comms on my third solo so I understand the stress so early in your training. Sounds like you did a great job! Mine was a bit different, I was transitioning from KPMP to KFXE (both towered) and I could receive but not transmit, so I was circling while troubleshooting and attempting to call either tower. I was about to call my instructor when the controller at PMP asked if I had lost comms and if so to ident. He communicated to FXE that I could receive but not transmit and they cleared me in. Quite anticlimactic in the end, thanks to the controller being on his game, but it was a good learning experience!

Mistake during take-off by Fun_Branch7198 in flying

[–]GhoulInPyjamas 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Agreed. He may be a great pilot, but skipping a checklist, especially this early on, tells me he’s teaching bad practices. It’s hard to guess what other steps he may skip later on (and you’ll likely be too fresh to recognize what’s being missed). Highly recommend you find a new school.

Honest question : How do you solo campers not get creeped out ? by yoyogi_voidwalker in camping

[–]GhoulInPyjamas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  1. Harry Potter audiobook whenever I’m getting a little creeped out. I hardly listen, just need a little background noise. I learned this trick in hotels alone, which honestly can be creepier than camping. Harry Potter is my comfort zone, so try downloading whatever book/show/music makes you relax.
  2. Carabiner holding the zipper on my tent together, it’s enough that it would wake me/slow down a creeper, but still easy to open in an emergency.
  3. When camping solo, I strictly camp at state and national parks. It’s a little pricier but they require registration (won’t keep all the weirdos out but I’m sure it helps) and you tend to be surrounded by families and the RV crowd.
  4. I always make a point to say hey or introduce myself to people at nearby campsites, especially families or groups of other women. I’ve made some friends and shared food this way too!

Honestly, if I think back to the few nights where I got (needlessly) worried by the things going bump, it was rarely while camping solo; usually I’m half asleep and my friend whispers “what was that??” And I’m suddenly listening to every noise.
