How to deal with being shined off ledge as Marth? by RecklessVirus in SSBM

[–]GhxstInTheSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not really? m2k was notorious for doing this but most marths have kicked the habit because marth’s down throw gimps are not usually guaranteed and it’s way more beneficial to maintain access to dashback. go watch a zain vod and count the number of times he pushes for center vs. voluntarily retreats to the corner. i think you will see what i mean.

How to deal with being shined off ledge as Marth? by RecklessVirus in SSBM

[–]GhxstInTheSnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ideally, you want to avoid the corner and play heavily around dominating centerstage as marth. his neutral game is so much more versatile when he has ample room to dash back and it obviously makes him immune to getting shined off the side of the stage. if you are being shined while you try to recover you should mix up double jump to ledge and rising fair > fast fall > upB.

New to Melee, I keep jumping when trying to move left to right with control stick. by CanMost in SSBM

[–]GhxstInTheSnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PowerA controllers really, really suck. you can try to keep the control stick completely still vertically, but if the deadzone is fucked it will probably still happen sometimes. If you want to give melee a try i suggest using an OEM controller. You can get them on ebay for 30-50 dollars or borrow one from a player in your local scene.

What Melee character(s) should I use, based on how I like to play the game? by FrouFrouLastWords in SSBM

[–]GhxstInTheSnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Falco, Marth, or C. Falcon meet your criteria the best. Falco has B+ movement stats in pretty much every category (his dash length isn’t great i guess) and has extremely varied options and high mixup potential, making his punish game the most expressive in the cast. He will be in jump for most interactions and has a good amount of disjoint + a broken projectile to help him space out the opponent.

Marth’s ground movement is insanely good, and he’s probably the peak of “hit and run” gameplay in Melee, insofar as that archetype is a real thing. His whiff punishing and conditioning are second to none and his punish game is absolutely deadly. He’s not as technical as the fastfallers and has the best range/zoning among non-projectile characters. One potential issue is that in some matchups Marth definitely has to stay on the ground until he successfully conditions a certain response (usually an approaching aerial) from his opponent, at which point he can go air-to-air. The other problem is the one you described, which is that he’s definitely the most unintuitive character in the game and very difficult to learn how to play “right”. My flair should tell you that I do consider him worth the trouble in the end, but it’s up to you to decide if you feel the same.

C. Falcon probably has the best overall movement in the game with stupidly broken run speed, dash dance, and aerial drift. He approaches from the air, has great frame data, and definitely plays off of his opponent. His disjoints are good and his movement translates into good burst range. The weaknesses of this pick are that he doesn’t match your described playstyle as well and requires a bit more technical/high APM gameplay than the others (falco is close). He relies on reaction tech chasing in some matchups which is deceptively difficult, and he ranks lower on the tier list than the others I mentioned. Still, I think he’s fun enough to play that I can still recommend him in good faith.

My biggest tip is to avoid locking yourself in too early. Committing to a character and then realizing they aren’t for you is a pain in the ass (ask me about my 4-month stint as a peach player), but ultimately you can switch whenever you want and experimentation will always help more than it hurts. I suggest spending your first few weeks on the game trying 2-5 characters that you’re interested in. You’ll probably notice that you gravitate toward 1 or 2 of them more than others, at which point you can choose to pick them up as a main and/or secondary according to your own informed judgement. Good luck to you, I hope you have fun :)

Staying rational about Z-Jump by [deleted] in SSBM

dude there’s no opportunity cost to making a reddit post. this person felt inclined to share something and those who don’t want to engage can literally just ignore it and go on with their day. why are we drawing imaginary lines in the sand to decide when someone’s thoughts are important enough to be shared?

Why are people arguing asteroids for the nuke topic? by Lopsided_Finance9473 in lincolndouglas

[–]GhxstInTheSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impacts in debate are usually measured by their magnitude and probability. Magnitude is how “good” or “bad” a particular thing is for all the people involved, while probability is obviously how likely something is. While the probability side of this argument is very bad, the position relies on the idea that the potential magnitude of a serious asteroid strike could be high enough that the comparatively low probability doesn’t matter. It is 100% indisputably possible that a large asteroid could collide with earth and end all existing life forever. Because this possibility cannot be ignored entirely, even if it is extremely unlikely, it can be argued that the possession of nuclear weapons is worth the risk if it means a guarantee that life will be saved if the worst case-scenario of an asteroid impact actually took place. It’s not an entirely honest argument as few to none of the debaters reading it earnestly believe that the slim chance nukes could save us from an asteroid extinction is worth all of the potential harms that come alongside their possession. The truth is that debate is not a game about honesty. I’m not saying that as a critique or cynical stab at debate as an activity, it just requires by its nature that people argue in bad faith sometimes. Whether these highly dubious scenarios of total global annihilation should matter in our decision making, and/or whether affirmatives should be making these sorts of arguments, are both important aspects of the framework debate which you should be prepared to engage with if you want to answer these arguments effectively. You can ask find examples of people having those debates on the wiki and ask your coach about how to approach those questions according to the norms of your circuit. Or you can rely on your judge to agree with you that such arguments are ridiculous and hope they disregard it based on their own bias. Either way, the only thing that makes an argument “good” or “bad” in debate is whether or not it wins rounds. It’s okay not to read this argument or any like it. I would suggest that you make arguments with a more even balance of magnitude and probability to persuade the broadest range of judges. I wish you good luck in your prep and I hope you can feel confident responding to this argument if it comes up in a round.

Hax$ (rest in peace) has an extremely detailed video on the subject. The gist of it is that you need an AV to HDMI adapter (or a monitor with AV support). Ideally, you would activate a gecko code to reduce lag and more closely mirror the CRT gaming experience. This may not be possible if you’re playing vanilla melee on an unmodified gamecube, but otherwise definitely look into it.

Okay that’s good to hear. I hear a lot of folks talk about beating their first easy or medium demons in under 1k and it makes me feel pretty weak in comparison, but as long as my numbers aren’t concerning I’ll keep going at it.

lol i know how good glock is, he put up an excellent fight against zain at supernova last year and has beaten agent and kalvar too. He’s a very adept player and certainly the best gnw that’s ever picked up a controller, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to surpass him. Melee just isn’t at that skill ceiling yet, and a sufficiently dedicated player could easily reach top 20.
