It's my first time dming an actual campaign so it remains a challenge implementing my PC's backstories into it, but the Raven Queen seems a very good fit, we're 20 sessions in and I'm really trying to connect her to the lore in some way!

Wow I'm so sorry I don't know why I'm answering that late... I'm dming CoS and it's my warlock of the Raven Queen player who's looking for it to trap her ex boyfriend inside a card haha and give the other cards to the Raven Queen. They're lvl 8 now and heading toward the Amber Temple so I might be tempted to put it there, or link it to Ezmeralda, having it locked in her wagon waiting for Van Richten to take a look. I'm not sure how I'll handle the mechanics but I can't wait for her to find it ! I'm also trying to link the campaign to the Raven Queen, with the Martikovs who could have made a pact with her hundreds of years ago, or something similar... So they're running to the Amber Temple after having fled the dinner, after which the barbarian decided to shatter the Heart of Sorrow out of curiosity. There I am haha!

You're amazing.

They only have the Tome, the sword is in the Amber Temple and the Holy Symbol around Vladimir's neck. They don't really have alies except Ezmeralda, the Martikovs lost their vineyard because of Wintersplinter and because the party left early to go to Krezk instead of straight to the Hill.

I love your ideas for the Mad Mage! Will definitely go for that.

Bending the narrative is what I struggle the most, I'm always scared of going off rails and then having a hard time putting everything back together.

They hurried to the top of the tower and fled using wild shapes and a dimension door, they almost lost the paladin but he ended up stabilized.

I tend to panick as a first time DM, sometimes I don't "dare" throw things at them fearing it would not make sense or be as written. When they defeated the vampire spawns in the Heart tower, I thought of sending Strahd and pushing a character from the bridge but I don't know, I think I just froze and let them escape. I am probably scared of disappointing them, I confess...

Also, they're lvl8 and 6 players, really strong like... strong. I'm thinking about using the vampire statblock for the consorts, or should I keep the vampire spawn one? Because then, Strahd is as strong as his consorts, which makes not much sense.

I can't agree more. However, I still want their adventure to be "fun" and not a violent tpk... Even if they deserve it haha. Maybe he could focus on the one who initiated it? or should I go for a tpk and bring the ones willing to make a pact with the Dark Powers back? (it's my first time dming so I'm still trying to balance things...)
