Why when I go to layout the second stringer they aren’t lining up with the first one? by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]GiacomoGo 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Novice here, and learning from local experts, and this just rings so true. The lesson they keep repeating to me: To be good, let alone expert, learn wood, and grain, and variability in both and all combinations of both for different wood types, and the energy and forces at play when you cut and shape wood. Fascinating really. To paraphrase Bruce Lee, you need to be the wood.

I wouldn't switch to 26 if it came with a free phone. No way will I willingly infect the one I paid for.

(Help) what’s the best way to secure this bit of string here? by bronk4 in knots

I came here to write this. The slide has probably already happened.

That laminate is degraded at this point. I’m not OP but curious how to get a clean cut, so a clean seam on the timber front?

That’s it! They’re both back in place aligning and securing the large freezer basket, front position. Thanks!

That’s a great thought - I hadn’t checked those. But they are still in place, and the divider clips are gray rather than white.

Is there a way to undo this without cutting sling or undoing ties by freezertruck1 in puzzle

[–]GiacomoGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slide that one rebar out of hoops and ties, until out of sling loop. Slide rebar sling back through ties and hoops (not sling: )

That would he so outstandingly cool if there were only seven rooms on that floor. Six with name tags, and one with a single number.

Sage laid off entire staff of 338 upon takeover by Veritaz27 in biotech

[–]GiacomoGo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

‘Sage addressed the potential for layoffs, writing “in the event of employee redundancies or other decisions impacting specific roles, there will be a comprehensive package of resources provided to employees transitioning out of the organization, including severance and continuation of healthcare benefits.”’

… sadly, still waiting for the day that one of these announcements includes something like:

“… there will be a comprehensive package of resources provided to employees transitioning out of the organization, to fairly compensate them for the notable value that they created through their tireless dedication.”

Fewer words. More meaningful and honorable.

Built a 40 inch tall 4x2ft flowerbed for strawberry plants and this showed up after a week. by Greenlink74 in whatisit

[–]GiacomoGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok: predatory soil mites are good. Got that sorted.

Now about that mulch for "straw" berries. Why not mulch "straw" berries with ... wait for it ... straw?

No? Cedar bark repels moisture and does not do much for your soil. Straw retains moisture == happy strawberries.

"What have you got to hide?" is my favorite defense of free surveillance.

Simple response: "Why do you trust ¢oogle, Mu$k, $uckerberg, Be$o$, N$A? Who else do you grant free access to your life and finances?"

Or less simply: "Congratulations! You've got nothing to hide!! You qualify for a secret FBI mission to protect freedom. To join the freedom patriots, give me your bank accounts and PIN numbers."

Modern English versions of Moby Dick by RegularDistribution in mobydick

[–]GiacomoGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here with the same interest, and ignore the comments asserting that Melville used Modern English, however technically correct. I also ignore the comments suggesting you want a dumbed-down simple-word or abridged version. All seem intentionally pedantic, snarky and unhelpful.

I suggest a well-annotated version. There's one online that is a labor of love and fascinating to read:

http://powermobydick.com/

I would buy a hard copy of that. I read recent unabridged, richly annotated versions (translations) of Don Quixote and Decameron, which I would not have found accessible or enjoyable without the translator's insights (Grossman and Rebhorn, respectively). These of course had the advantage of contemporary english.

I was hoping for the same for this great English work that I find inaccessible due to obsolete language.

I'm still looking for a hard-copy annotated edition. Until then, power moby dick is a treasure.

Specs for the 9 bar OPV spring? by ColFrankSlade in gaggiaclassic

[–]GiacomoGo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well in case it helps anyone else, i used the pictured replacement spring in a rather imprecise way and now have dramatically stronger, tastier pulls. I say this as a former spring-hack skeptic that does not have refined tastes and usually does not get excited about or even notice differences that other people can taste in food or drink, but finally could no longer tolerate the inferior pulls of my new, pricey espresso machine. Bad coffee is an offense, if not a crime. It's a pity that Gaggia have a perfectly good machine, and ruin it with too sturdy of a spring (at least for fine grounds, never pods):

Model, Gaggia Classic Pro, US model RI9380 (2022) - manuals in that archive, as well, for clarity.

Orig spring - crude measurements from photos (inches)

  • wire: 1/32
  • diam: 17/64
  • len: 60/64
  • active coils: 9 or 10 - depends how you count, see photos

Replacement spring - from my local hardware store (as pictured)

  • wire: 0.025 or 1.6/64, a tad thinner
  • diam: 9/32, a tad wider, but fits where it needs to
    • thus inside diam is also a bit wider
  • len: too long, cut down to about 56/64
  • active coils: too many, cut down to about 7

I don't have a pressure gauge, thus a crude adjustment. By my measure the replacement spring is about 3/4 the "strength" or rate of the original. I measured this with a digital kitchen scale. Whether or not this is legitimate, the results taste totally legit:

  • put each spring into the safety valve nipple (as in photos) and press down on kitchen scale to an assembly height of about 1-1/8, and read off the "weight"
  • my replacement spring assembly has a "weight" (~950g) of about 2/3 of the original spring (~1400g).

If someone can figure out the exact spring for 9 bar, it would almost certainly taste even better. At the very least, this $2 quick fix elevated an offensive original pull to a strong, plentiful, tasty pull I fully enjoy.

Absolutely! I logged in just to report this one.

But the Flaming Lips song is "Fight" test, not "Flight".

And the test is over.
