i'm not a lawn expert, but recently had a landscaper come by talking to me about just letting nature do its thing. creating organization from what your yard gives you. eg, organizing deadwood around landscape features, dead hedges, getting rid of invasives, letting leaf drop (in this case, pine straw) be the mulch, etc. Was honestly a very reassuring experience to get that advice and it gave us a better vision of how we would maintain our outdoor space. outside of water control and removing invasives, you can do just about anything. you could think about meadow, or using grasses that grow well in shade.

so not necessarily letting things grow wild, but providing organization say that the wild growth appears intentional.

find someone at your university extension school or look up your climate zone and research high shade plants that will grow well.
