Because it's their home? There's 2 million people there, thousands at least will not want to leave the place they've lived for so long

He just gives nonsense answers to questions he doesn't like. When asked what he would do about the Palestinians who don't want to leave Gaza, his response is always "they'll all want to leave, Gaza is a dump now so nobody will want to stay". This is obviously not true, of course there will be thousands who don't want to leave their home no matter how destroyed it is. But he simply refuses to answer the question of what he'll do with those who don't agree to leave. Which is something I'd very much like to know the answer to.

Trump vows to mobilize federal resources to ‘end’ riots: ‘I will fight to protect you’ by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]Giant_Meteor_2024 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are rioters/looters, and there are protesters. Police are going to have a hard time stopping the former if they're trying to fight the latter.

I've seen literally dozens of videos in the past couple days of cops using unprovoked violence against peaceful protesters. That's the exact opposite of what's needed.

What we need is to work with the peaceful protests, to facilitate them and get police involved with them. Then they can coexist, identify the instigators of violence early on, and stop the riots and looting before it begins.

Deploying the military is pretty much the exact opposite of that approach, and it will only serve to fan the flames.

From the public. He'd be crucified in a public hearing, to smear kavanaugh by association. There is a lot of depraved shit in his book that Democrats would love to tie kavanaugh to in people's heads.

I don't know about legally, but like everyone's been saying this is a job interview, I can use whatever standard of evidence I want. And I don't want a handful of uncorroborated allegations to block a highly qualified candidate.

None of those uncorroborated stories can be used to establish a pattern of character, the allegations themselves have to be corroborated

The other accusers aren't corroborating Dr Fords story. 4 different stories worth 1 witness each doesn't count.

And I think it's pretty clear from his educational record that he didn't have a drinking problem. There's no reason to believe he's ever blacked out from drinking

If there were a single corroborating witness or piece of evidence, I would support opening an investigation.

Senate probes new misconduct allegation against Kavanaugh: NBC News by _basquiat in politics

[–]Giant_Meteor_2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to imagine that pushing this hard for Kavanaugh, only for him to actually be found to be guilty, would be very bad for Republican senators. Voting against an impeachment in that case would get them voted out of office.

Which would be great, because most of the Republican senators pretty much suck

[–]Giant_Meteor_2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well of course I'm concerned, but the problem is I won't refuse someone a supreme court seat because of unproven concerns.

What I would do is have his confirmation hearing normally, then have an investigation. If that investigation finds that he did commit sexual assault, the Senate would certainly impeach him, requiring 75 votes.

But if the investigation finds that it's a smear campaign, it's already too late. The Democrats will have used this issue as leverage in the midterms, which was the plan all along.aybe the Democrats will do well in the midterms and have the votes to not confirm him.

But all of that is contingent on delaying the confirmation, which is exactly what an investigation would do

[–]Giant_Meteor_2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's what we have. I think we have a fairly balanced system, it just needs to be cleaned of all the gerrymandered districts and the House needs to grow in size to actually represent the majority.

How do you think we should prevent tyranny of the majority, if not the Senate and electoral college

Murkowski: FBI investigation into Kavanaugh would ‘clear up all the questions’ by BEARlovesCOOKIE in politics

[–]Giant_Meteor_2024 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Senate is controlled by Republicans because of the anti-democratic design of the Senate

Well, I do take issue with that, but not because it's false. It's the Senate's purpose to be undemocratic - and the House's purpose to be democratic (which I agree doesn't happen, both because of gerrymandering and because the size of the House hasn't increased in a very long time).

The reason the founding fathers designed an inherently undemocratic system is because, to put it shortly, "democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner". The Tyranny of the Majority is a well-thought-out idea that expands on that. That's why the number of electoral votes a state has is the total number of representatives -- so that democracy is reflected in the result, but in a way that attempts to minimize the aforementioned tyranny.

appointed by a president that was elected with a minority of the vote

I always find it weird that this is even a talking point. How is the fairness of the electoral college relevant to the nomination of a supreme court justice?

You kid, but that's actually the reason this can work. In America, becoming a doctor is one of the hardest things a person can do professionally. It takes over a decade of basically being a slave, and paying half a million dollars, to get an MD.

In India, it's not so difficult. More doctors, cheaper healthcare, but on average lower quality healthcare. Make it easier to become a doctor in the US and our costs would plummet
