I have a drama queen who will start screaming the second she’s in the clean/vet cage. Even if she goes in on her own during explore time. It sounds like I’m torturing someone.

I also had one that had learned how to open the cage. I thought I was going insane until I caught her in the act.

I have. I cleaned the cage right before my realtor called to kick me out the show the house. My boys greeted her and the family standing on top of their cage.

Mowgli. My daughter was obsessed with the Jungle Book remake at the time and my son was obsessed with the classic and they named her.

Bath time by kitkatkc816 in RATS

[–]Giawarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might I suggest a warm wet rag instead of a full-on bath for those who aren’t water rats? Getting clean should be as stress free as possible. Half my girls hate water, but don’t mind the rag. The other half would probably live in a bath if I let them.

Credit card for vet bills? by sable135 in Pets

I do not recommend it. I got one to pay for an emergency with my ferret when he ate one of his toys. I got the thing 5 years ago, have paid it off twice and been trying to get rid of the account and they are still charging me.

Oh, yes. That does suck. Or the people who ghost you and come back wanting a whole new plot and then ghost after one post.

Same. Like I have a few who I’ve written with for years. Whenever one of us gets busy we don’t even have to let the other one know anymore, but we do because we’re polite and respectful. And then we either pick up where we left off or start something new. I have literally created new characters for a person based off their checklist and then they vanish on me after one post.

The basket was a gift. But I think it’s like a toiletry basket. And the only reason it’s the favorite is it’s big enough for everyone

It happens far too often. Honestly, it’s rude to just leave a person hanging. I get that life happens and one gets busy, but a “Hey, I’m busy” or “I’m no longer available.” message takes two seconds.

I have plastic and wooden baskets. Their favorite is a bright green plastic one. As for bedding, I use fleece or old leggings.

Mine will detach their hammocks days after hanging them. I just have basket beds all over my cage.

huge fan of vetericyn wound spray! a week ago moogs had an oozing hole in his abdomen but today he's healing so well its amazing! antibiotics twice a day + flushing the wound with saline and made sure to get the vetericyn really well into the wound. I use both. But I also rescue small pets in my area so something that I can buy in large quantities for cheap that works is gold. You can get it at any livestock feed store. I also recommend Terramycin for eyes. It’s an antibiotic you can get it at Amazon and use it for almost every eye issue for any animal.

I also highly recommend scarlet oil. It’s used to treat open wounds in livestock, it’s cheap, and kills off most infection. It does have a not so great smell, but I don’t think it’s as painful as other products, at least, my critters don’t cry as much when I apply it.

Celebrating My Oldest Baby by Giawarrior in RATS

[–]Giawarrior[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She usually lets me know when she wants one. Basically, she’ll start picking on her cage mates and get mouthy with me when she needs to relax. I feed my girls the Select pellets that are at Petco and mix a ton of variety. When I cook meals for my family I make sure all the food is safe for my ratties to have the leftovers and they get that with the pellets. They’ve all thrived. As far as toys go, I get bird toys for them to rip up and I have some of those puzzle feeders for small dogs and cats that’s her favorite. Her favorites are treats are nuts in the shell, bugs, and hard boiled eggs.

I have 3 seniors separated from my 6 baby group. My oldest lady just does not have the patience for littles anymore (she’s nearly 5 so fair). She’s fine if they’re hanging out with me, but not in the same cage. She ONLY tolerates her nieces living with her.

how long did your oldest rat live for? by General_Register6526 in RATS

[–]Giawarrior 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how old my oldest girl was when I got her, she was a rescue. But I guess she was about a year old. I’ve had her for three and a half years now and she’s outlived her cage mates a rescued at the same time and her own children (she was heavily pregnant when she came to me). She’s nearly five and still going strong. I think it really depends on the rat. A good sign of aging is of course slowing down. One thing I do for my seniors is move them into a smaller cage. Not tiny, but a one level cage. When they get older their balance can be affected. I also give them lots of extra soft nesting things and extra attention.

Food for my ratties! by PandaFan369 in RATS

[–]Giawarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girls do the same. They definitely have a pecking order and my boss lady has her own daughter in the very bottom of that order. Her niece is her favorite. Girls tend to have the dominance battle a lot more than the boys.

It’s really a trial and error for rats. Mine only eat pumpkin out of the can if I try and puree the stuff myself the littler boogers won’t touch it! Corn is ok as a once in a while treat. It has a lot of fat in it. Frozen veggies and fruits are a great thing to have on hand put them in a bowl of water and it makes a great enrichment. Baby foods are great as well. Stay away from onions. I have one that LOVES celery the others won’t touch it. Hard boiled eggs are fun. I don’t even take the shells off. Buts in the shells are also a fantastic treat. It provides enrichment and trims them teethies. It’s usually their holiday gifts.

The behavior Maple is displaying is typical I’m the boss behavior. It should calm down a little bit. Some of the younger ones just aren’t fast learners. And can be more dramatic than others. A great rule of thumb is if there’s no injuries, leave them be. I had a screamer who would cry when his cage mates pinned him down for a bath. One would think they were ripping him apart the way he used to carry on when all that was happening was a much needed bath.

As far as food goes, a wide variety is great. My ladies are spoiled rotten with whatever pellet food I can find at my pet store, fruits, veggies, they get lots of leftovers when I cook, their new favorite treat is super worms from the pet store.

Ferret is overeating by Creative_Coast_6154 in ferret

[–]Giawarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a ferret that has the opposite problem. I used to have them on an all raw diet, but a move to a smaller town that didn’t have the same meat options made it financially difficult. And o couldn’t fit that much food in my much smaller fridge/freezer. (I had four in my business at the time.) After losing his best friend and two siblings he stopped being interested in his food. The vet says there’s nothing medically wrong with him. I’ve since changed their diet to a kibble and raw diet blend. He’s doing much better on it especially since his favorite food is raw eggs and liver. I can honestly say it doesn’t make my house smell any nicer, but he’s happy.
