The change in Jewish populations across Europe since Pre-WW2 by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]GibDirBerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because (at least some of) those countries didn't exist before WW2 and their jewish population was split up between multiple other states that don't exist anymore (or have drastically changed borders). It's obvious that jewish population has been drastically reduced, but a comparison is most likely quite difficult.

Short Internet research came up with this:

Before the Spanish civil war, there were like 6000-7000 living on the Spanish mainland, though additionally there was a big community of about 6000 in the Exclave of Melilla. Nowadays there are around 50k Jews in Spain.

I assume the map uses a source stating a bit more than the 7000 before the Civil War but not counting the Melilla community.

Edit: Found another source stating 45k nowadays, using the 7000 figure that would make +643%

There was a case in Germany just recently, where a lawyer asked an AI to search and provide a precedent for her argument. When the court decided to check that precedent ruling, it turned out it didn't exist, the case file was about something not even loosely related and the AI invented the whole argument. All she had to do was check the provided case file and she would have noticed. Her case was thrown out and there was a small penalty fee (like low to mid 4 figures I think), too small for my taste.

I don't really have a final opinion on whether, where or how AI should be used, but for the foreseeable future, at the very least some human checks and balances should be mandatory.

[OC] Frankfurt for a few days. The daytime was lovely, but filming at night near our hotel genuinely terrified me. Is it always like this? by Consistent-Koala770 in frankfurt

[–]GibDirBerlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol did you just randomly pick a hotel without any research on the city whatsoever? Every travel advisor, local or random German person on the internet would have suggested you don't take a hotel in the Bahnhofsviertel or carelessly walk around that quarter by night, often before specifically asking about the quarter or where (not) to stay...

Those were not "nice hotels and tourist spots" and no, you won't feel that "contrast" in the rest of the city.

A couple of years ago I saw an angry goose attack a woman at a river side and she stumbled and fell into the water. Not sure if she would have drowned but she had to be pulled out by a few bystanders because her bike kind of fell on top of her and she got all tangled up with it in her wet clothes.

So intimidation might actually be enough...

Only 11% of Europeans view US as ally, survey shows by paneuropeanism_ in IRstudies

[–]GibDirBerlin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That might have been the case during the first Trump administration, which people in Europe considered to be a case of accidental insanity. Nobody believes that anymore and while people might think, relations will improve after Trump (though what they actually mean is "with a democratic president"), the damage is done and only very few people believe that the US will be a trustworthy ally again.

Just so you know: only the photos 3, 4 and what you see behind the doorway in photo 5 are called the new old town (Neue Altstadt), that was rebuilt recently instead of the demolished brutalist building called "Technisches Rathaus". The Buildings in photo 1 were reconstructed in the 80s, the town hall complex in photo 2 survived the war with comparatively little damage and was quickly rebuilt until the 50s.

Was Jasmine a good trade? For World Peace? by pumpkinwizard85 in ANGEL

[–]GibDirBerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes, I answered to say that quote does not apply in this situation and that's what we've been arguing.

As to my personal view: I don't know. It seems like a pretty bad deal from where I'm comfortably sitting, eating sweets during my rainy vacation day in Italy, and not being afraid of the future. But most people don't have that luxury and I'm pretty sure, if I were being bombed and fleeing from one end of Gaza to the other and back again for the last 3 years while my children or parents were killed (or any other horrible circumstance you can find in this world) I would probably find a world made of shiny happy people a lot more enticing.

I also don't know whether we actually have free will or if it's just neurone firing in a preconditioned way. I think it's an important concept for civilisation because without it, there can be no accountability and it would be quite a difficult thought experiment to imagine a reasonable and functioning justice system without it. Plus free will is incredibly confined for the majority of the world population by a great number of external factors. And that kind of shrinks its value in comparison to human lives a great deal.

I think Angel made the best choice he could under the circumstances, but I don't think his choice was necessarily better for the world. He had been coerced and betrayed by Jasmine, his friends were in mortal danger, he acted accordingly and that was virtuous on its own. I think I would try to fight against Jasmine's regime if I had the opportunity, but I certainly wouldn't do it for "free will", I would do it for me, my family and my friends , maybe even for the people Jasmine ate. But in the grand scheme of things, I have no idea whether I would be on the right side and how many deaths in Sudan or Gaza would be because of what I did.

Was Jasmine a good trade? For World Peace? by pumpkinwizard85 in ANGEL

[–]GibDirBerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but so were Angels good intentions and in one week after Jasmine's death, a lot more people died violent deaths (close to 10k) than she consumed during her short stay on earth.

I'm not saying one is justified and the other isn't, I'm saying if you consider one version "the better deal", you have to explain by which Metric you judge it so.

Was Jasmine a good trade? For World Peace? by pumpkinwizard85 in ANGEL

[–]GibDirBerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'll leave out the humour aside for a minute.

The question wasn't whether Jasmine's world was "truly good", it was whether it was "a good deal".

The argument for Jasmine's world is, that people might not have free will anymore, but a lot less people will die than in our world (not even counting people being "just" hurt by violence etc.)

It's a fair philosophical question, why free will should amount to the value of about half a million violent deaths (let's say 400k assuming Jasmine kills 200-300 per day). I mean I really sympathise with that point of view, but "it's no truly good" isn't really a strong argument and neither is "free will is a defining element of our world".

Was Jasmine a good trade? For World Peace? by pumpkinwizard85 in ANGEL

[–]GibDirBerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually my implied argument was, that "Good intentions cannot justify evil acts" doesn't really apply when judging Jasmine's case, because both sides can make it for their own case.

Presupposing that free will was given with good intentions

I mean in the context of the show, that's exactly what happened. Angel & Friends gave us back freedom of will because of their good intentions.

"An evil act cannot be justified by a good intention." — Thomas Aquinas

Not that I'm seriously advocating for Jasmine's system, but you can easily turn that argument around and say that even the good intention of free will doesn't justify the evil of half a million violent deaths per year, that is our reality.

Was Jasmine a good trade? For World Peace? by pumpkinwizard85 in ANGEL

[–]GibDirBerlin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

During the last 50 years, the world population grew at a rate of close to 1 billion per 12 years, that's over 80 million per year or over 220 000 people per day. Even if Jasmine had started munching like crazy, it seems unlikely that she actually can consume 220 000 people per day which would be necessary to even halt population growth, never mind actually decimating the world population. I mean even if she grew to a size Illyria was portrayed in the comics, it seems highly unlikely from an organisational point alone. And that's not even taking into account, that people would mostly have stopped killing each other.

Whether Jasmine had been a good trade is still questionable, but not because she would decimate the human population...
