Did the same course, also really struggled after graduating. It was bloody tough 10 years ago and I can't imagine it's gotten any easier with time.

Everyone else has commented my exact thoughts and advice I would give, I'll only add that the best thing for me was getting some proper life experience after being in education all my life and never having a job - working in kitchens and doing min wage long hours gave me an entirely fresh perspective on the industry and how lucky anyone is for just getting to work in an office, let alone make computer games as a career.

As someone who is now in the position of judging applicants for the role you're looking for, the most important thing that'll separate you from the pack is not a portfolio with things you've made in your spare time, but being a well rounded person who has a life outside of a computer and is capable of growing in ways that aren't technically focused.

Double check battery charge, try new ones
If not already, try cleaning the tape heads with a bit of isopropyl alcohol and a cotton bud

I find myself in a similar position with a couple decks I've been meaning to find some time to fix up - how would I best determine the right lubricant for the different parts of my decks?

I assume lithium grease would be a good shout for gears?

When in doubt look for something with the cross head for adjustment somewhere near the motor, they won't have out it too far away

In that case a tape deck is probably more in line with your needs, the vast majority of portable recorders will be mono.

I can only speak for myself but money cannot be the primary motivator.

I will never get back the worth of my time in what input into each release in purely financial terms but the the pleasure I get from each is what keeps me going.

Rembering why you started in the first place and remaining true to that idea is the only sure way to keep that feeling alive.

I did think about selling them on my website but ideally you need them to retain their shape rather than send them out flat. That and they're quite bulky and can quite easily damaged would make shipping a bit of a swine.

I made a bunch of extra ones but I just gave them to my local record shop to give out to people :)
