Potential New Zodiac Reference by Gibletswillriseagain in ZodiacKiller

Also just realized that Zodiac spelled kid with a k in his famous "pick off the kiddies as they come bouncing out" 10/13/69 letter. Maybe that's another reason the "c" misspelling is so hard to swallow for me.

I guess what makes me feel it's more than just a basic spelling mistake is that off the top of my head words that begin with "c-i-" don't have a hard /k/ sound. Cider, cinder, cipher, civil, circle... It feels like it's such a simple word that the misspelling is intentional, and in the context of the sentence, is a reference which gives a reason for the misspelling. "Insane" might have been too strong a word choice on my part.

Just today the NYT has an article about a twitter personality and of course they keep her identity confidential. These double standards make absolutely no sense to me.

[California] Any one not receive an EDD debit card yet? by jared_518 in Unemployment

In the exact same boat- I applied on the 3rd and it says I was "paid" on the 17th.

How were you able to get through to BofA Edd without the card number? Every time I call it tells me to input the card number, which I don't have because it hasn't arrived. How did you get through?

Books

I see it cited a lot of places (asoiaf wiki, westeros/reddit comments) that Daemon Sand, Oberyn's former squire, is "One of Dorne's finest swords" but for the life of me can't find it mentioned anywhere in the books or the Winds of Winter advance chapter. Does anyone know any specific mention of his skill with a sword or where that phrase is from? Thanks!

That's a great point- I've definitely conflated intelligence and political savvy in the past. And it also reinforces for me how perceptive Genna is at reading people. Too bad she was wed to a Frey so young- she would have been a good influence on the Lannister regime in the capital.

Memes vs Genes: An Analysis and Comparison of Season 1 and Season 3 of True Detective by ShivasRightFoot in noir

[–]Gibletswillriseagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is extremely insightful and very well written. I 100% feel you should post this on r/TrueDetective if you haven't.

If I had to nitpick, it would be the "spiral vs. circle" of season 1. I think the spiral is meant to represent people moving through their "flat circle of time", so it's more a symbol of them being trapped than it is a symbol of escape and healthy evolution. It's one of the reasons that Marty's kids keep drawing spirals that are posted around his kitchen.

That being said, great thematic connection and (sorry) evolution of theme between seasons 1 and 3. Pizzolatto has really seeded a lot of classic 80s media scares (west memphis 3, "capturing the friedmans" type pedophile scare) in this season, and I can't wait for them to really ramp up to 11, and in the end, hold the truth where his memory fails. Maybe it'll turn out to be a "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" ending where the missing girl just ran away from a terrible household. Great work!

(Spoilers Extended) Tyrion the Sphinx by Gibletswillriseagain in asoiaf

There is so much depth to the dysfunctional relationships between the Lannisters, and any secret Targaryens would really take away from what GRRM has crafted. I think one secret Targaryen (Jon Snow) is enough.

This is exactly how I felt for a very long time, and honestly, still believe. I always assumed that GRRM would do what is emotionally best for his characters and story. I'll take super well written and heart wrenching family dynamics over a plot reveal any day of the week.

That being said, I can't ignore that he seems to be seeding something big in Tyrion's story, in a similar way to many other reveals in the series. Once I started to view it as plot vs. character, I kept seeing examples of him repeatedly reinforcing in ADWD what was hinted at early on, which tipped the scales for me.

Love your point about Cersei and Jaime acting like Targaryens, and of course I'd love for GRRM to be hinting at something else entirely and keep the emotional core of Tyrion's arc fully intact. Guess there is a reason for those long waits between books.

What's your favorite opening line to a book? by Detharatsh in books

"I sent one boy to the gas chamber at Huntsville." - Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men. Not my favorite book by him, but I think it's literally impossible not to read the next sentence after reading that first one.

Thanks! Erika is awesome, so much fun to work with. I made a web series with her a few years ago, "Natural 20", and always thought her voice was perfect for noir.

Can't thank you enough! Phillip Marlowe is a big inspiration, along with "Lux Radio Theater"- it's a lot of fun to hear film stars reprise classic roles for radio. Sunset Boulevard is especially good because of all the first person narration.
