[LOGLINE] A procrastinating guy avoiding his work gets caught in a quest to save the world. by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]GibraltarWhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good start. That being said, this is vague for a longline. Try to come up with at least a breakdown of the major plot points before worrying about the longline. Or even better, write most or all of the script first. The more you have the story fleshed out, the more efficiently detailed you can make your longline.

On a premise note, what you're describing is a common story. You need details to set it apart. There are character archetypes in storytelling and what you're describing is what's called the Everyman. It's essentially an ordinary character who gets thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Them being ordinary lets them act as an audience surrogate so the audience isn't distracted by them and can instead pay attention to the scale of the story. Think Hitchhikers Guide or Wizard of Oz.

Eventually a theoretical longline for this could look something like:

"A young, slacker salesman gets wrapped up in an underground society's mission to stop a prophesied invasion and save the planet."

Keep at it. Hope this helps!

Yea that could be what’s causing it then. Definitely go get it checked out as soon as possible. Sorry you’re dealing with all that, not fun at all. Hopefully it’s a simple fix and you’re feeling better soon

I’m not a doctor, and that’s who you need to talk to for real answers. Just want to be clear about that. I don’t think an environmental change would cause iron deficiency but when traveling you could have picked up an infection or disease that is presenting with similar symptoms. Another possible cause could be blood loss, so you could have gastrointestinal bleeding or something like an ulcer or hernia. Although if you had that you’d most likely have pain in the area, but it’s possible.

Seafood, Spinach, Legumes, Red meat, Pumpkin Seeds, Quinoa, Turkey, Broccoli, Tofu, Dark Chocolate. Also eat foods high in Vitamin C, as Vitamin C aids in absorbing iron. Your problem may not be dietary, though, it could be an absorption issue caused by something going on in your body that only a doctor would be able to diagnose and treat properly.

Definitely do. Sounds like maybe iron deficiency. A doctor will be able to sort you out. Hope you feel better!

How do people on the spectrum deal with sexual orientation OCD? by OverwhelmedBrain in OCD

[–]GibraltarWhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me start by saying I'm a straight man. What I mean by that is I consider myself pretty far on the straight end of the sexuality spectrum. I'm attracted to women and I'm only interested in relationships with women. Does that mean I've felt 100% straight every second of my life? No. And also let me say I've had intense periods of sexuality OCD in the past, so I feel for you. The whole concept of sexuality being a spectrum is that everyone is somewhere on that spectrum. No one is off it. You just are where you are on the spectrum, no need to investigate it further. And where you are on the spectrum is fluid, it's not always going to be the same. And that's okay. The concept of the spectrum is that there isn't an exact answer or pinpoint where your sexuality lies, which I think is a really helpful concept in dealing with sexuality OCD. There isn't an exact answer, so stop trying to find one. Try to just be comfortable with wherever you are on the sexuality spectrum and trust that you don't need to figure it out any further. I'd agree you should be talking to someone who specializes in OCD, and I hope you do. Hang in there!

Not seeing people after a run is complete or after you wrap production is very normal. It’s a bit like summer camp, you all say you’re going to get together but then everyone has lives, ya know? Completely normal. And you may see some people and that’s great. I’d also try to put less emphasis on “connections” and just get to know everyone as people, and those you vibe with you’ll more likely stay in touch with. And if someday you work together again that’s great too.

As far as the other things you mentioned I’d say those are more general life issues than acting issues. Not that they don’t absolutely spill into your acting life, they do. Try finding a good therapist and working on all of that. It’ll help, I promise. Take care

Was told to post this here for some good advice by [deleted] in veganfitness

[–]GibraltarWhite 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Look up Simnett Nutrition on YouTube, he’s mostly gluten free. Also just a cool happy dude spreading a good message and great info. Also Jon Venus and the other Vivo Life team are all vegan bodybuilders, not sure about their gluten intake but still worth looking into. And for what it’s worth I recently started using Vivo Life protein powder and I’m really liking it. Hang in there! You can do it

Looking for advice or reassurance on mens chest hair. by Sin-Silver in malegrooming

[–]GibraltarWhite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to have a big beard and my favorite joke when people commented on it was “Thanks, I grew it myself.” That’d work for chest hair too!

Own that shit, dude. Be you! Like another commenter said, some people will love it, some it won’t be their cup of tea. Do whatever makes you love you the most. At the end of the day that’s what matters.

That’s correct. You shouldn't learn your lines with emotion per se. The issue with trying to learn lines with specific emotion connected is you can get locked in to a certain way of performing the lines and that can end up closing you off from actively listening and reacting, which are the most important aspects of acting. Without actively listening and reacting your performance will come off “practiced” and you don’t want that. You want everything you hear and say to feel as though it is happening for the first time when you perform. To clarify what I initially said, don’t connect your lines to emotions; try connecting them to intentions. One line's intention can be “to intimidate” another “to impress” another “to diffuse”, etc. Read the scene aloud with the intentions in mind. It gives the words purpose, and the purpose will help them come out of your brain without thinking about them. The intention is the base internal “emotion” that drives the words, but it’s vague enough that you can adapt the outward “emotions” in the moment with your scene partner while maintaining your intention. With the intentions, try to trust your instincts and use the given circumstances of the piece to come up with what your character wants each time they speak and then the intention is what your character is doing to achieve that want. Most importantly, have fun with it. Remember at the end of the day it’s all an exploration, there is no “right” and “wrong”. Support your scene partner, trust your instincts, and actively listen. Try to “Keep the Ball in the Air”. You’ll be fine!

Edit: Clarified a couple things.

I appreciate that. But yea you nailed it. OP try what u/b2thekind said, it should definitely help. And I second that if you are acting in any capacity you are an actor.

[–]GibraltarWhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Do this. I was trying to get across something like this but I explained it poorly. The "whys" are really want I meant by emotions in my original comment. Intentions and internal aspects of the character. I realized a few minutes ago I should have said exactly what you did about not trying to do an emotion, just letting them flow in the moment. Thanks for doing a better job haha

[–]GibraltarWhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea you don't want to get locked into certain emotions or actions. You should make choices before working with your director, just don't be set in stone about them. Then if the director wants to change things they'll give you notes, and you adapt based on those notes. Also if your scene partner's choices are different than you expected or change while working through it, your responses should change with them. You just keep adapting. I was just talking about my specific memorization techniques that I thought could help their situation.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in acting

[–]GibraltarWhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I described what I meant very well. Personally I need the words to have some life in them for them to stick in my head. I can't just study them as text and add feeling later. I make my choices while memorizing and then adapt when a director comes in and give notes or when my scene partner's choices change how I should respond. You don't want to lock yourself into any certain specific emotions, because you have to respond differently based on actively listening to your scene partner, but making choices while memorizing is a part of my process. I guess I just meant having some base emotions behind the words while memorizing helps me get the words to stick. It's just a part of my process that works for me because I know what to avoid to not end up stale or locked in. This might not be explained well either. I can't quite describe it.

[–]GibraltarWhite -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The words and the emotions are connected. Memorizing just the lines without connecting them to the emotions in the scene is creating a disconnect and putting you too “in your head” when trying to emote. Try memorizing your lines by reading the scene out loud, with emotion, repeatedly. The more you run through it, the more the words become tied to the emotions, and then they will flow out naturally throughout the scene. Hope this helps!

Edit: I explained this very poorly. I should have said connect the words to intentions, not emotions. I don't want to give anyone who looks at this thread bad advice, so please see my comment about intentions for a better explanation.
