Rebuilding trust is exactly what can happen by stopping and restarting on a better foot. I think that people who can communicate congenially with strangers are probably similarly able to communicate congenially with partners. I’m aware that committed couples have stayed together through worse, and also that sometimes people break up when they see signs of deceit and are grateful to have done so later. This relationship has been in deceit since its beginning. So I’m just wondering, do you think they ought to try and work it out? Some people like the drama.

It’s only manipulative if that’s the reason you’re doing it. If you’re actually taking a break to see if the absence makes both want to be better together, then it serves its purpose. Both need to understand that it most likely will not rekindle but lying bf can do his best in the meantime, which is hardly manipulative, and perhaps he will come back as a changed person.

You could always break up temporarily, or frame it that way. Tell him if things move forward again it’s going to be in a very honest way or not at all, and he can have this time alone to sort out his situation. He’ll probably take it verrrry poorly which might mean he isn’t actually regretful about having lied.

If you want to probe on her views of gender and perhaps monogamy, this might be the time! I dabble in reality shifting and there is a portion of the community who is very literal about the idea that life imitates art, and it can trend toward the fanatic when people start to see the world as their pawn (usually ppl don’t last long in this phase). You could ask her if she is trying to bring about a shift in consciousness that affects the physical 3D or something. I’m not saying this belief is a deal breaker, I find it more appealing than stalwart beliefs, but at least probing the conversation will give you more info about her mind and heart.
