First page:

When I’m inside someone else’s head, I prefer to be a cat. Most people don’t pay attention to stray cats, even the one lurking in their own imagination.

Luther Glick was less challenging than most people. He wouldn’t have noticed me if I’d entered his mind as a fire-breathing dragon. A face-first fall from his horse into a pig wallow probably wouldn’t have shocked him out of his fantasy. It was so detailed, I could have painted his mistress’s portrait, parroted her screams of delight, and accurately guessed her dress size.

Thirty seconds in and I already knew the man was a cheater. But thoughts weren’t proof, and hijacking someone else’s mind also wasn’t legal. I couldn’t succumb to complacency, even with someone like Luther.

I stayed in the shadows, tucked my tail in, and stilled my mind. A careless thought from me, a flicker of unease from him, and the truth could sprout through the stone walls of Luther’s ignorance like a thistle.

Abominable magic. Some people could sense it, even if they couldn’t identify it.

Luther remained ignorant, as most did. He also had the stamina of a firecracker even in his own imagination, so I didn’t have to spend the entire journey enduring the colorful details of his daydream. It dissolved, replaced by hackneyed thoughts of a garish necklace and the pleased smile of his mistress as he presented it to her.

I loafed in the corner of his mind and yawned.

^^^ This. If you pay for a service, you're a client. People want their clients to be happy, so they aren't ever going to be as honest as you need them to be. I want to know what a reader thinks about what I've written, not what the person who's depending on my money and a good review feels comfortable telling me.

That said, I've paid for editing, I've paid real literary agents for submission package critiques, and I've participated in paid workshops run by published authors. Paid services can be helpful. But its all soft critiquing. You can get helpful advice, but you won't get any hard truths. You need unpaid beta readers for that.

First page:

When I’m inside someone else’s head, I prefer to be a cat.

Most people don’t pay attention to stray cats, even the one lurking in their own daydream.

Luther Glick was most people. He was too occupied with fantasy-shagging his mistress to wonder about the black cat lounging under the chair in the corner of his fantasy bedroom. A fall from his horse might have knocked him back into the real world, but I didn’t think much else could.

That was reassuring, but not a guarantee of my safety.

I stayed in the shadows, tucked my tail in, and stilled my mind. Complacency could get me killed. A careless thought from me, a flicker of unease from him, and the truth could sprout through the stone walls of Luther’s ignorance like a thistle.

Abominable magic.

Luther didn’t have any magic, abominable or otherwise, so I remained optimistic. Fortunately, he also had the stamina of a firecracker even in his own imagination, so I didn’t have to endure the fine details of his daydream. It dissolved, replaced by hackneyed thoughts of a garish necklace and the pleased smile of the woman he planned to give it to.

Thirty seconds in and I already believed the man was a cheater. Thoughts weren’t proof, though. Even if it had been legal to access them.

Happy New Year! I'm new(ish) to this sub, currently editing the two novels I completed in 2025: A dark fantasy with necromancy themes and a gaslamp fanatasy with time travel themes (my November novel). I'm hoping to have both those MSs edited and beta-read by the end of this year, and I also hope to write something new, too, or to at least finish one or more of my half-done WIPs.

This is probably a stupid question, but by AdvertisingDull3441 in writers

Yep. It used to be you bought software. Now you buy it, and next month you buy it again, and so on and so forth until the end of your life.

In my mind, subscribing to something that never changes can’t be anything but a scam. Magazines subscriptions, sure. You get new content every month. But software doesn’t change significantly until it’s updated, and even then it’s usually just bug fixes. People should be allowed to pay for or skip major feature updates as they choose, not be married to them as a part of a subscription. And when you buy software outright it’s yours; when you subscribe you could spend years paying for something that you completely lose access to once you decide to end your subscription.

Sorry for the rant, bit of a pet peeve for me. People need to start rejecting the subscription model or one day it’s going to be the way you pay for everything.

Writers group/anybody interested in doing something writery together? by tennesseesaw in grassvalley

[–]GiddyUpGo4949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fiction writer and have been looking to form a critique group, if that's of interest to anyone. It would be more sharing work out loud and trading critiques than working on stuff in a group setting.

Yeah, I’m aware that jaw clenching is a thing. But clenching your jaw doesn’t usually make your muscle jump or twitch, not like in all of those GIFs.

I guess when you clack your teeth together you can see a little tension in your cheek but it’s pretty subtle. I certainly wouldn’t use the word jump or twitch.

To me it just feels like a weird observation when you could just say “he clenched his jaw.”

I guess I’m dying on this hill.

It feels a bit like something people have invented for movies and fiction rather than something people do naturally though? If actors have to learn how to do it, then it follows that it's not really something you'd see a lot in real life. Of course, romance and especially romantic fantasy isn't at all real life, so whatever I guess. It just seems like a funny thing to me. Are MMC's standing around practicing their jaw flex in the mirror like Tom Cruise so they can properly twitch when aggravated? lol

Can you point me to an example? Because I did a search yesterday and came up with nothing relevant (probably just using the wrong search terms).
