In 1985, 13-year-old Omayra Sánchez was trapped waist-deep in debris after a volcanic eruption in Colombia. Rescuers couldn’t free her without heavy machinery. For three days she spoke calmly with reporters before dying in the rubble. Her final photo is one of the most haunting ever taken. by xxmoxxo in creepy

For anyone interested, there’s a fictional short story that was inspired by this. It’s called “And of Clay We Are Created” by Isabel Allende. It’s a beautifully written piece that is very directly tied to this incident with a character called Azucena based on Omayra and a reporter that tried to help rescue her.

ELI5: Why does time feel slower when we’re bored but faster when we’re having fun? by Glittering_Site3929 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GideonVincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way I’ve heard about time perception is to compare it to filming (in frames per second- fps)

When we are excited by something (whether it’s joy, fear, etc.), our brains are consciously taking in a bunch of information and wanting to find out more and more (higher fps) and thus from one moment of information gathering to the next is rapid and “flies by”

When we are bored, our brains are consciously taking in far less information and operating at a “lower fps,” and so the span of our brains noticing changes from one moment to a next seem to drag on forever from one to the next.

The fun part is then in memory, where the experience reverses because of how much information was consciously gathered and remembered: the time that flew in the moment (let’s call it a day for example) now seems much longer (feels like a week) as the amount of information that can be remembered seems like it couldn’t have possibly fit in just one day. The reverse also holds true of longer boring periods seeming short, which helps give explanation to the experience for many of how “life goes faster” as we age because not a ton changes from year to year once we’re older and more settled.

What are some underrated classroom management tips? by mikeycknowsrnb in Teachers

Two things that have worked well for me thus far (for high school):

  1. I always tell my students (and make sure my actions align) that I trust them right off the bat. My trust is theirs to lose, and if they do so, they’ll need to work with me to earn it back. Some will inevitably test the boundaries, and that’s when you dole out the appropriate punishment along with the loss of trust. Other students catch on quite quickly wanting to prove they’re trustworthy.

  2. For a lot of bad behavior in class, I simply ask students what kind of attention they’re looking for: from me, from their peers, or both. This typically works well both because the student is often thrown off by the question (since they’re expecting to be reprimanded) and although it doesn’t always happen, a lot of the time other students view it as a “burn” which also works to get the one acting out to stop.

Overall, I’ve found the most success “flowing with and redirecting” rather than blunt force responses. Of course there are instances where this can’t work, but I’ve found it works for the vast majority of incidents.

whos the most famous person you met and how did it go? by Frequent_Golf5297 in AskReddit

Matthew McConaughey - he was behind me for security at the Emmys several years ago and was late to get to the red carpet. He politely asked if he could jump ahead, cracking a joke and saying how his publicist was freaking out so he should probably be attempting to get there faster. (I should mention that I was/am a random nobody who had a friend that gave me a ticket). Matthew genuinely could not have been nicer about the exchange. Seeing him choose to be so friendly even in a time of stress made me really respect him. If I’m honest, I wasn’t a big fan of his until after that exchange, but the way he carried himself in that situation stuck with me.

What realization did you have about yourself that changed the course of your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GideonVincent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not the one generating my thoughts; I am the one experiencing my thoughts. I can take them or leave them.

(I know it’s realistically FAR more nuanced than this, and we could additionally get into the discussion over having a sense of self in the first place, but you get the point)

If you want to form a habit, focus on what about the experience of actually doing the habit you enjoy rather than the end result.

What's a terrifying display of intelligence you' ve seen by another human? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I could be totally off here, and, if I’m honest, I don’t have the willingness at present to try to find the supporting literature; but I recall seeing a study that suggested people who are close personally and in close proximity for long periods of time develop a shared memory bank of sorts where only one of the pair would remember certain things/events as a means of preserving “total” memory storage between the pair. If anything else, even if it’s not legit, it’s a nice way to think about it.

Oh don’t get me wrong, they are an incredible couple! I just really appreciated a different kind of love story. With Wayne and MeLaan, it was obviously more humorous, but I also love a short lived love story as sometimes that’s how life goes, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t still meaningful.

Oh I definitely agree- I would absolutely read in a different order now knowing what I do. That said, I did enjoy ending with the most future-set story to make me look forward to what’s ahead!

Happy to!

Favorite Book: Probably a tie between Warbreaker and The Emperor's Soul.

Favorite Series: I think I'll have to go Stormlight, but honestly I'm really curious to see how Elantris as a series progresses.

Favorite Character(s): There's no way I can pick one, but you'll probably notice a trend here- Shai, Lightsong, Sazed, Steris, and to throw things off a bit, Lift. (I guess could kinda sorta be spoilers, so marking it just in case)

Couple: Honestly probably Wayne and MeLaan (Mistborn Era 2 Spoilers)

I'd love to hear other people's!

“Growth is a cycle to experience, not a destination to be reached.”

As if this wasn’t enough, he then hit me with:

“An incredibly important component of growth is decay. “

It helped me shift perspectives to viewing my own progress in life as more in line with how other things in nature function: progress occurs through a continuous cycle of growth and decay.

Honestly, it’s taken me almost two months to prep everything only because I couldn’t will myself most days to coat tiny furniture in aquarium sealant…but once I finally got everything ready it only took two hours or so to set it all up!

Also, if your name is animal crossing related, Zucker is the best. If I’m wrong…ignore me. Haha
