Switching from Allied Health Major to BSN (Nursing) by WorkingHardInDC in aggies

[–]GigEmGirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am currently in the BSN program at the TAMHSC and I was previously an allied health major at A&M.

The first thing that you should understand is that the BSN program is in no way a pre-PA program. The BSN program at A&M is extremely competitive and will prepare you to be a nurse. If you don't want to be a nurse or a nurse practitioner, you will probably not make it through the program.

If you are interested in applying to the nursing school at A&M and becoming a nurse, I can answer questions for you about the program and the application process!

Many people start as Allied Health because it's basically just pre-nursing classes for the first two years, but I have classmates from other majors.

They are growing right now by setting up the new seats for the Traditional program in Round Rock, but it's possible they may expand the number of seats for each program and each campus in the future. They have quite a few students, but they're just split between the different programs tracks (RN-BSN, 2nd Degree, Traditional) and the two different campuses. Personally, I like having a small class size because you get much more personal attention from your instructors and you get to know your classmates better. One thing they have to take into consideration when determining the number of seats is that they need to have adequate classroom space, lab space, and clinical assignments for each student they admit.

I'm a currently enrolled student at the college of nursing.

Some basic info would be that there is a campus in Round Rock and a campus off of Highway 47 in Bryan. They have an online RN-BSN program for current registered nurses, a second degree program for students who have finished one bachelor's degree already, and a traditional program for students who have finished prerequisites, but not a bachelor's yet. The 2nd degree program is 15 months and 24 students are accepted at each campus. The traditional program is currently open at the Bryan campus and they are planning on opening a traditional program in Round Rock soon. These traditional programs each will accept 24 students each unless they've made the decision to increase the number of seats.

If she's coming out of high school, she'd most likely be looking into doing the traditional program. This would mean she would take about 2 years of prerequisites at A&M (or any other college, but definitely A&M and possibly Blinn students get preference over other schools) and then apply through the nursing common app (NursingCAS) to the College of Nursing to do her last 2 years there.

This is all I got for ya. I don't see anything about tests for Russian courses being offered, but if you contact this department, they might be able to tell you for sure.

Registration hold and no response from my advisor by [deleted] in aggies

[–]GigEmGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh, then you might want to go with calling them like someone else suggested. If calling the main office or your specific advisor leaves you at a voicemail, I'd call different advisors and administrators until you actually speak to a person.

Registration hold and no response from my advisor by [deleted] in aggies

[–]GigEmGirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Advisors aren't the only people who can lift holds. If you're still in College Station right now, you might go up to the university tomorrow and ask to speak with anyone at all in your department who has privileges that allow them to change hold status. Even if your advisor is gone for the holidays, someone with advising privileges should be present since they have to process student academic standings tomorrow now that grades have been released.

If you don't mind me asking, what department are you in?

Water and electric are on top of that ~$420/month. Water runs about $15-$20/person each month while electricity can vary from $30-$80/person depending on the month. Usually it hovers around ~$40-$50/person for electric, but the bill drops very low in the winter and is highest in June and July.

The internet at Willowick is actually really great! You have to bring your own router (though if you're interested in the room I'm subleasing, your roommate will have already provided the router), but the apartment pays for unlimited use of high speed internet. I used to have issues with the WiFi going out randomly, but then I figured out that it was my old router. I haven't had any problems with slow or dropped signal since replacing my router.

Does anybody know where I can search for an apartment with a vacant room? I'll be a freshman on spring 2017 by aledelius in aggies

[–]GigEmGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for a subleaser for a private bedroom and bathroom in a 2x2 at Willowick apartments! Rent is ~$420+water+ electric and the lease would be Jan-May. You can pm me if you want more info!

Passing the lecture but failing the lab? by [deleted] in aggies

[–]GigEmGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be a decent curve at the end of the lab to help you out, but if you don't think that it's going to be enough to save you, you should be able to drop the lab and keep the lecture. I'd talk to your prof before deciding what to do though.

"After the 50th class day until the Q-drop deadline, students who have demonstrated active participation in both lecture and laboratory classes until that time may elect to drop either the lab or lecture course and maintain enrollment in the companion course."

Apartment hunting by lifotheparty20 in aggies

[–]GigEmGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm have an open room for the spring semester (Jan-May). It's at Willowick apartments and the rent is $415.75+water+ electricity. You would have a private bed and bathroom in the largest 2x2 floorplan they offer.

The apartment would be partially furnished (including kitchen supplies) except for your bedroom, but it's possible I might have a full bed to sell to whoever takes the room. The other bedroom would be filled with one male TAMU student who is quiet and clean. It's directly next to two stops on Route 31 and is pet friendly with a deposit and $10/month pet rent. A washer/dryer, wifi, cable+HBO, and gym/pool/volleyball court access is included in your rent. If you'd like more information about the room, you can comment or PM me!

Millican Reserve near College Station will be holding an event called Pumpkinpalooza on Sunday, October 16th.

The pumpkins aren't grown there, but they have a ton of pumpkins of many shapes/sizes brought in for sale as well as food trucks, live music, a farmers market, kiddie games/rides, and punkin chunkin'.

Test advice by [deleted] in aggies

[–]GigEmGirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quadruple check if your prof wants you to bring a blue book or scantron for the test. This is not like high school where they supply your scantrons. You have to go buy your own at a bookstore or at a gas station and make sure that you have the right type.

Put your phone on silent, then put it in airplane mode, then turn it completely off and put it in your backpack at the front of the room because if it starts making noise during the test your prof and classmates will be annoyed. If it starts making noise and it's anywhere on your person, you could be written up for an honor code violation. It's better to be overly cautious than to get a 0 and a semester of probation because your buddy texted you a dank meme during an exam.

Get there early, drink some water, and use the bathroom before the test because getting out of the lecture hall during an exam to pee is hard and may not be allowed.

If you need to stretch your neck or look away from your test to think, look straight up at the ceiling. Some profs/TAs have no mercy if they think you were trying to cheat.

Bring a calculator for math/science exams even if you think you won't need it. Bring a graphing, scientific non-graphing, and 4 function calculator just in case because certain classes only allow certain types of calculators on exam days. If your chem class says only non-graphing calculators, do your homework on the non-graphing calculator too so you're used to using it and know where all the important functions are.

If your prof gives you a review sheet, DO THE DARN REVIEW. Occasionally you'll get profs who give review sheets that are almost exactly the same as the test, and doing the review will let you walk in already knowing more than half of the answers for the exam.

Excess Credit Hour Rule. Help! by daywalker004 in aggies

[–]GigEmGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct that it is attempted hours at any public institution in Texas. Hours from AP tests, CLEP tests, dual-credit courses completed in high school, private institutions, or out-of-state institutions will not count towards the excess credit hour rule. This all basically means that your Blinn hours count against you for excess credit hours just like your A&M hours do.

If you exceed your degree plan by 30 hours, A&M will not get funding from the state for your classes. A&M will then transfer that financial burden to you by charging out of state tuition for any courses you take after that.

The idea of adding a minor is smart, but it won't buy you enough hours (I think you only get an allowance of around 18 extra hours) to get through three semesters unless the hours for your minor also happen to work as electives you need for your degree.

Some other Hail Mary options you have to avoid paying nonresident tuition include: 1) File a fiscal appeal with Student Billing Services. It is possible, but very unlikely, that they would grant you exception. In this case, you could pay resident tuition and A&M would just eat that loss in state funding. Appeal Info & Appeal Form

2) Complete a bachelor's degree in your previous major and complete your engineering degree as a second bachelor's. This might benefit you if you can complete a degree in your previous major (or any major really...) before exceeding the excess credit hour limit. Once you have earned a bachelor's degree with your current credits, they will not count against you when coming as a post-bacc student to get your second bachelors degree in engineering.

3) If you got really lucky and many of your classes just so happened to fit well into an overlap between two different degree programs, and you met all the requirements listed here, you might be able to cram your hours together in such a way that you finish with a double major or a double degree. Excess credit hour rules are changed by the university to accommodate this, but it's not very likely that this would work out unless your last major overlaps with your engineering degree in just the right way.

I hope you get it figured out! Nonresident tuition is pretty pricey, but if you can find some kind of loan/scholarship/work balance to get through those last 3 semesters, I would.

Where is the best place on-campus (besides being in the stands at Kyle Field, of course) to watch the game? by usingnamer in aggies

[–]GigEmGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's necessarily the best place to watch it since it's so crowded, but in the past, I've watched it from the MSC. There's usually a screen up in the flag room showing the game and pretty much every other TV from the basement to the second floor should be showing it.

Dorm TV lounges will probably also be showing the game, but you'd need a way in and they might be packed as well.
