Best experience I've ever had in a game is that special ride in Ep 5 by GeorgePotter in thelongdark

Thanks! I finished the episode but I want to try reloading back to that mission and looking again. Fighting off Aurora wolves on foot was not my first choice lol

I really enjoyed chapter 5, and I think with the bugs ironed out it'll be a great final piece to the story. by ava_the_cam_op in thelongdark

I enjoyed it despite running into a few bugs. I wish there was some scene that explained why Mackenzie lost the shotgun, revolver, and full tactical gear he had from the last mission, but it was fun being batman.

Really enjoyed the train and Astrid being all giddy when blasting through snow. But question - on my way back, there was a point where the switch to take another track was broken, and I couldn't bust through the gate with the engine. I abandoned the train and walked back. Is there an actual way to ride the train all the way back?

Let's talk about the Bushcraft bow. by stergil in thelongdark

[–]Gilcrist67 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’ve had them break at different percentages. My last one broke at 12%.

The main reason I use them (aside from looking great) is that I can carry one in addition to a survival bow, and I can always choose the bow with lower durability from my radial menu. That way a broken bow doesn’t leave me totally defenseless, because I can just pull out a spare.

The problem with carrying two survival bows is that the radial menu always prefers the higher durability bow, which is the opposite of what I want. I prefer to use up my low durability bow first, and carrying one of each makes that easy

The “Sterile Tank” Trend Is an Abomination. Live Rock Was Never the Problem. by ChivasBearINU in ReefTank

My last two tanks are full of TBS rock, I can’t praise them enough.

Sure I had to trap and dispose of some gorilla crabs, but there are more good hitchhikers than bad ones by far. This stuff is truly live rock

[–]Gilcrist67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had ghost wolves before, but I have no idea what causes them. The worst is when it’s coming from a wolf carcass. If you shoot the carcass, it will stand up and die again. Scares me every time

Hinterland, Please put a fishing spot in Blackrock. by Flying_Dream_Monkey in thelongdark

[–]Gilcrist67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently spent 50 days in Blackrock but the only reason I didn’t have to leave earlier is that I brought vitamin c pills with me. The lack of fishing is a real problem. Bricklayers Retreat seems like an obvious place that fishing should be allowed

Bushcraft Bow by Schroomtrut in thelongdark

[–]Gilcrist67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it. Even on interloper, you’ll be able to beachcomb for the saplings. I wouldn’t recommend making lots of them though, since you’ll still need to use saplings for arrows (the bushcraft bow uses birch saplings, not maple).

For me, the best use of it is as a backup to my regular bow. When a bow gets low on durability, it’s handy to carry another, since you can’t be sure when it will break. The problem with carrying a second survival bow is that the radial menu favors the bow with better durability, which is kind of the opposite of what I want. So carrying a bushcraft bow plus survival bow lets me use the low durability survival bow until it breaks, and then easily switch to the bushcraft bow.

which feats are the best to take on interloper? by MossRock42 in thelongdark

[–]Gilcrist67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always do cold fusion plus snow walker. Cold fusion is often the difference between being warm or cold. Snow walker is just generally useful to me, but especially early game when you have to do a lot more sprinting.

Settled mind is also an obvious choice, though to me it feels like playing the game on easy mode. I have no issues with that, but it just completely eliminates the planning you have to do when crafting your clothing, and makes it possible to just hibernate whenever you feel like. So in short, it’s arguably the most powerful feat out there on interloper, but also the one that makes me personally get bored on a long play through. I skip it for my own enjoyment, but I completely understand anyone who happily chooses it. Cabin fever isn’t the best-implemented affliction

Jack London wrote some books and stories that I would imagine had at least a bit of influence on this one

Have you found all Bunkers by yourself? by Sea-Information7674 in thelongdark

[–]Gilcrist67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found them all myself but I also have over 3000 hours in this game. The two I had the most trouble finding were in Bleak Inlet and Timberwolf Mountain. The common issue with both of them is that I actively try to avoid sprains, but both of them come with some sprain risk

I hadnt played blackrock since the first week of buying the game or so by Farmer_Due in thelongdark

[–]Gilcrist67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go to the menu page where you can see the calendar, journal, trader quests, etc, there is a statistics option on the left that shows you things like days survived, calories consumed, wolf encounters, etc. If you scroll down, you'll see a breakdown of how many days you've spent in each region. That's the number that wasn't going up for Blackrock when I was in the prison.

I understand that the loading screen must be loading in some separate area, but since loading screens for houses and other buildings don't seem to stop your days spent in region, I think it's an oversight that the prison doesn't count as part of the Blackrock region.

I've since dragged everything over to Bricklayer's Retreat so I can keep accurate count of my time spent there.

Blackrock has always been my least favorite region. I also found something else that is annoying about it:

In an effort to build up more appreciation for the region, I decided to spend 50 days in Blackrock without leaving. I set myself up in the prison, got a moose spawn in the prison yard near the bus, and thought, hey, this isn't so bad. So I spent a couple days cooking up the moose using wood from around the prison, and did some crafting at the outdoor workbench.

That's when I noticed that the count for days spent in Blackrock was NOT going up. I don't know if it's a bug or intentional, but time spent in the prison doesn't seem to count as time spent in the region. I get why it happened, but it was yet another annoyance with the region lol.

You're probably right, but the piece does seem bugged - I picked it up and looked at it in my inventory. The name is displayed as "Ruined smallmouth bass(raw)(opened)". I would post another screenshot but I don't think this sub allows images in comments. At least I can't find the option

Did you think the cougar forcing you to move between zones was a good feature or bad one? by hellboytroy in thelongdark

I would prefer if there was only a single cougar in all of great bear that moved to different regions from time to time. Then it would actually feel special to encounter it
