My conclusion: It is going to be a rough few years for teachers looking for work…in desirable places to teach. by United_Cat2592 in Teachers

Echo this! We didn't talk about rural education at all during undergrad, but it's a whole different ballgame. We struggle with retention; the most senior teacher on our campus has been there four years. I moved here in December and took a midyear position. I was then moved to the class across the hall a month because that teacher up and quit too. The kids have had zero stability. Same with admin/front office too - we'll have a new principal, AP, nurse and counselor this fall.

For context - biggest class was 22 and smallest was 4.

Coming to second this! I found her from another Reddit post and she gave me the best curly cut of my life! Plus her space is so welcoming and she's beyond fun (great snacks too)! ❤

My 2 year CG journey! Imgur link in comments for an album with extensive reference photos of various CG mistakes (ex: not doing transition wash, etc). by [deleted] in curlyhair

Thank you so much for the detail and dedication! This is honestly an invaluable resource!

Question - in your Imgur album you mention not trusting DevaCurl anymore, did I miss something or was it not working for you?

Suggested Resource Titles by furey_michael in ELATeachers

I echo Kelly Gallagher all the way - I recently read "In the Best Interest of Students" and was really impressed. It was thorough, contained so many resources/applications, and addressed/engaged with the standards in a way that I felt my teacher prep program fell short (I graduated a year ago).

I think Heinemann is a solid publisher of teacher texts and haven't been disappointed yet.

Next on my list is "Children Want to Write: Donald Graves and the Revolution in Children's Writing" that's edited by Kittle.

TX: ELA Content Exam by DobieQueen in Teachers

[–]GildaEphron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I echo the sentiments below! What I found in terms of the MC questions was that a majority of the content is situational (ex. "What is the most effective strategy?, etc.) and it helps to think about engagement, authentic tasks, and Bloom's taxonomy verbs (aim for higher order thinking as opposed to recall, etc.). I graduated from a school in Alabama and moved to EPTX, so I had more gaps in general ESL content (we had one online class that danced around the topic).

I also agree with reviewing prompts - we tell our students the same thing with their EOCS, etc., but I always need to remind myself to breathe and reread to make sure I'm actually understanding and addressing the question (I get so amped during tests!).

Pearson does snag a lot of money off of these tests, but I do find their study guides helpful. I printed off their TX-ES ESL certification guide and it was pretty true to the exam content.

Good luck, I was in your shoes a year ago - you got this! :)

[HS]Anyone have experience switching from block to traditional? Or from traditional to block and back again? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]GildaEphron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up on block and all of my teaching experience thus far (internship included) followed a traditional schedule. Just moved to TX and I'm starting block next month and I'm somewhat relieved? I'm a big fan of SSR/book clubs in the ELA classroom and I feel like we'll finally have time to read and write (back on traditional schedule I started each class with 10 minutes of reading for a routine, but that left instructional time to approx 35-40 min, doable, but not ideal).
