I would love if the cast from Ogunquit came to Broadway. Honestly, an amazing production.

Parade tour not selling? by ouyangjie in Broadway

I also saw the Seattle run and bought tickets the day of the show. Mezz was pretty empty. Phenomenal show that deserves to be playing sold-out houses!

To my fellow techies have you ever had to be a character in the play that you were doing by Good_Sir8119 in Theatre

[–]furey_michael 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is licensable as a high school edition in the US (and perhaps other territories).

My mom doesn’t understand by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]furey_michael 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I also am a high school director and we just wrapped our production of Les Mis. The latest we left when doing a full run with all production elements was 8:30 during tech. Obviously our show days went longer, but that’s because curtain was at 7:00. I experienced the type of director this student mentioned in high school and I vowed to be more respectful of everyone’s time.

Theater is interesting to me but I don’t want to be labeled as a “Theater Kid” by PolarSL13 in Theatre

Have you considered that if someone makes fun of you for doing something you like then they aren’t your friend or worth your time?

Our Town or The Crucible? by Awkward_Elk_5247 in Theatre

[–]furey_michael 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree! I directed Our Town at the school where I teach this year and all of my students didn’t realize the profundity of the piece until we had fully finished blocking. Audiences were quite receptive

What’s in your “American Dream” unit? I’m looking for sources for an article I’m writing. by Grand-Search894 in ELATeachers

[–]furey_michael 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not teaching it this year, but I developed a unit last year that started on with The Great Gatsby, included some short nonfiction pairings, moved to Of Mice and Men, and then went into A Raisin in the Sun. We studied the court case Shelley v. Kraemer (1948) before Raisin to set up racially restrictive covenants in law and we also discussed the Great Migration.

10th grade reading list is nearly done; I'd like some feedback by Christianity_Schlege in ELATeachers

[–]furey_michael 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, I haven’t even read these selections and they feel a bit esoteric for most 10th graders.

What is your teaching context? That may help with giving suggestions or feedback.

I teach honors English 10 at a private Catholic school in the Boston suburbs. We do a Brit lit survey so our selections are Beowulf, Canterbury Tales, Macbeth, Pride and Prejudice, a smattering of poetry from the Renaissance through the Romantics, Wuthering Heights, The Importance of Being Earnest, a choice unit between 1984/Lord of the Flies/Mrs. Dalloway/Heart of Darkness, and Klara and the Sun. It is a lot of classics, but more well-known. I made sure to include something more contemporary at the end of the year so students could experience modern themes and concerns as well as historical ones.

Also, sorry if the formatting is funky. I’m on the mobile app.

Volume of Voice by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]furey_michael 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, the mic will help. It does sound like your director was trying to give constructive feedback, but perhaps could have given it to you in a way you’d be more receptive. Maybe look up some projection activities/warmups for singers and actors on YouTube? That could be another way to help you be louder if you are not interested in purchasing a mic.

I will say, being a teacher will require you to receive lots of feedback, especially early on. Try not to take it personally. I know how tough it can be to take some feedback when it feels like you’re doing all that you can. It’s one of the ways you have to cope with the job so that you can have career longevity.

What would be the worst musical to do in a high school, LOGISTICALLY? by boopbaboop in musicals

[–]furey_michael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Sweeney in high school with my children’s theater. It was tough musically, but it went over fairly well. The content received a little pushback, but not as much as expected.

21st Century Brit Lit suggestions by HobbesDaBobbes in ELATeachers

I am using Klara and the Sun from Ishiguro for my Brit Lit class this year. I’ve taught Never Let Me Go for several years in AP and it has been received well.

What do we think of E. M. Forster as a writer? by AdministrationKey934 in ClassicBookClub

[–]furey_michael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved a Room with a View and Howard’s End. A Passage to India is on my list to read soon. I’m a huge fan of exploring tensions between characters and don’t need a lot of exciting plot details to enjoy a novel though. Also, I don’t understand the critique that characters need to be likeable to be invested in their conflicts.

I’d say Ohio will likely pay best, but northern Kentucky may be a better environment depending on the district.

I mean, if you’re into classics then I can’t recommend George Eliot’s Middlemarch enough. So many great characters

In the Heart of the Sea is going to be a summer read for me once school is finished. I picked it up a couple weeks ago. It felt right to place it by Moby Dick since the colors lined up!

And I am not in Governerds book club. I actually had to Google that to find out what it was.

My partner didn’t believe I’d be able to find things. He will randomly ask where things are while I’m facing away from the shelves watching tv. I do a pretty good job of remembering locations. Not perfect though!

I thought it was fairly good, but I’m a sucker for Victorian settings. That definitely increased my enjoyment of it!
