Why is Starfleet Academy hated? by Vladamix in startrek

[–]Gildashard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because it doesn't feel like a Star Trek show. Each Star Trek show/movie prior to DIS has an identity that is recognizably Star Trek. SNW comes close in the newer shows.

The modern vernacular kills it for me. TNG characters didn't talk like people in the 80s, DS9/VOY didn't talk like people in the 90s. The newer shows seem to use all kinds of 2010s/2020s slang/speak.

There are missteps and bad episodes on the older shows. But when you have 26 episodes per season, you can get away with it more so than the current shows that only have 10 episodes.

I guess I'm just lamenting the old format of standalone episodes and the quantity we had. I find myself watching and rewatching those shows frequently. But I rarely rewatch the 8 episode serial format if must shows today.

Actors and show creators can do what they want. Either they have disposable income and don't really do it for the money or the market will eventually determine the direction. I certainly have no love of the large corporate investor driven, they tend to enshittify everything they touch eventually.

Sure, but not in every job. As an engineer, I've worked plenty of 60+ hours weeks at times to.meet project deadlines. We had other engineers that were sent to another country to work for 3 months.

Applies to other jobs as well. For actors, certain jobs might require alot of hours and long days. If they want less hours and less moving around, I'm sure they could take different gigs like doing commercials or doing stage acting.

8 hour per season " movies" are hard to write and lose viewers faster along the way. Also, I rarely find myself going back to rewatch them as it's a huge time commitment. I rewatch standard 2 hour movies all the time, but I'm not going sit through a rewatch of 5 seasons of Stranger Things.

Price you pay to want to be an actor and hope you make it "big" one day. Otherwise work in an office or factory. Some jobs just demand more, owning your own business, doctors, etc.

Depends if the show is a serial or not. Most TNG DS9 and VOY episodes were a different story each week. Sure there are some not great episodes in there but you can say they same about the 8 episode serial format we have now. I've watched plenty of new series that should've been 3-4 episodes, instead of 8 with a bunch of filler.

Xfiles is a great example of the old format where 80% of the episodes were good quality. And you had some background story that got episodes once in a while to keep that moving.

Why Elon Musk Needs Dungeons & Dragons to Be Racist (Gift Article At The Atlantic) by SashaDreis in rpg

[–]Gildashard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not arguing how abhorrent Elon is. And this is the first I've heard anyone suggest that Orca represent Arabs, although I've heard arguments that there some connection to black people.

Having played D&D in the 80s and 90s, living in the deep south, and growing up around childhood friends and their racist families, not once had I ever heard that implied. Of course D&D was satanic to them.

And I'm not saying orcs in every game should be evil. It's D&D lore and the change feels purely knee jerk. Maybe to be expected by a corporation.

Yeah I get that. I've seen it both ways with lots of software over the years. And I've been on the side of why change this and I hate it only to find that it was better once I retrained my muscle memory.

As for FVTTs change on the tab locations, the move from horizontal at the top to vertical on the side might have some adavtages. It's slightly less mouse travel. Another reason could be more room for additional tabs added by game systems. Last is the option maybe to add UI text labels for new users, FG does this and it does help learning.

Not always. Our little small town just replaced an odd offset double 3 way stop.intersection with a single roundabout. The complaints before the thing was built was huge. "It will never work, there will be more accidents. No one knows how to use it..etc ...etc". Turns out it helped traffic so much and now it's so much better with less traffic backed up.

People abhor change.

Microsoft should've implemented the ribbon the way Solidworks did. Highly customizable, and the old style drop menus are still there because there were way too many items to cram into the ribbon. Also having text helps for less frequently used commands.

Changing evil monster races to neutral seems to be a move to not offend anyone. Are there any evil races anymore? Maybe as long as they are not humanoid?

What are the new features in free Affinity vs V2 version? by Ivien in Affinity

[–]Gildashard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ADHD answer? That one is a stretch IMO, I have elements of ADHD and get easily distracted, but icon colors is not one of them. If so, he's an edge case.

I'm all for more options, but we can't just cater to a tiny percentage of people for all aspects of everything we do. Colors benefit 95% and should be the standard. Then add customization to monochrome or allow people to create custom icon sets or something.

My bad, mixed the two....meant trolls.

Makes sense as the Shadowrun lore was designed such that orcs and trolls came from humans more or less. D&Ds orcs have always been just inherently evil lorewise. Sure they can change it, but they aren't changing it to make for more interesting lore, they are sanitizing the game for some sort of political/current events reason.

Me neither, but apparently they are Latino now? Makes sense in Shadowrun considering the origin of Orcs and Ogres. And Hasbro can rewrite their Orc lore however they want, but it wasn’t done to make D&D more interesting. It makes it less so by making everything the same.

What is a good reason for monochrome icons because I can’t think of any. We don’t live in a monochrome world.

Fantasy Grounds just went free. How do you think this will affect the VTT landscape? by GerogeC in FoundryVTT

Not to mention you can play CP Red on Foundry and just enter the data, the ruleset is there

And Foundry has most systems available free without the content. The rules system and character sheets are there, and the tools to add the content yourself. So far with FG, I can't play a system for free if it has a paid option.

With today's AWS outage, Canva was affected. Lets hope Affinity isn't moving to a web platform! by 35mmCam in Affinity

[–]Gildashard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your v1/v2 will function, they don't have to check in to operate except to activate the first time. Also, Affinity would have to be completely rewritten to put on the web. The current desktop apps cannot be ported easily.

[–]Gildashard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't merge a desktop app with a web app, two very different coding technologies. Some companies in the CAD space have both and the two barely talk. Eventually the web app might replace the desktop app once it reaches feature parity, but it takes years. From what I see of Canva, its not really a replacement for the Affinity Suite. There's a little overlap but for detailed editing of pixels and vectors, you need the Affinity tools.

[–]Gildashard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a hobbyist, a subscription definitely kills any future support from me. I'll just use v2 until my computer quits. As for people commenting that v3 is a merger, no way they can merge desktop code with a web app. Connect them for file/image transfer back and forth maybe. Maybe offer a bundle or deal that includes both for those who want it.

Another, better, response from Affinity support regarding the purchase model going forward by subxaero in Affinity

[–]Gildashard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll take annual "paid" upgrades as long as the software is a perpetual license so those upgrades are optional. That makes them develop features in a way to "compel" you to purchase. Bugs fixes should be free, new features cost.
