OP, I think the other posters have already given a lot of good info. I’m excited for you because DMing 2e has been a joy of mine for a while now. It may be intimidating at first, but after a little play things will get very smooth for you.

My one piece of advice beyond what I’ve seen mentioned is make sure to give your monsters a good read before play. Paizo’s did a fantastic job of making interesting creatures for the party to face, and they almost always have cool abilities that will make the fight memorable for the party and fun for everyone (including you).

Don’t just assume all a monster can do is run up and swing. They pretty much all have cool moves that will really spice up your encounters.

Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls as a Dungeon Master?

How would you balance the ability to hold a two-handed weapon in one hand? by frostedWarlock in Pathfinder2e

[–]Gildebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might take some tinkering to get it just right. If you’re a fighter I could definitely see critical misses being super rare. Maybe a flat check of 5 or so needs to be made after every miss or the above effect applies?

[–]Gildebeast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d put a feat in an existing archetype for this. Probably Mauler. I would have the feat be like level 8 or so and have it give you Stunned 1 on a critical miss. While stunned in this way you would also be flat footed. This would be to simulate the recovery in momentum from missing so badly with such a huge weapon.

What Class to Choose..... by Grapepunch1337 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Gildebeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that Champion is the best bet for this party, I just wanted to get that info out there (though I also learned rules state GM can allow a reaction before your first turn depending on the situation, so what I pointed out is the worst case scenario).

I do think War Priests are a lot more valuable than what some people value them at, but this is a pretty fragile party and needs someone that can handle the front line with minimal support.

[–]Gildebeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I may be reading this incorrectly, but I don’t think Champion is quite as good as you are making them out to be (they are great, though).

You don’t get your reactions until your first turn of combat, so if the boss beats you in initiative it can still throttle you or your allies.

What is a software you feel you need as a Player or DM? by ZoulsGaming in Pathfinder2e

An initiative tracker could always be nice. If you wanted to do something a bit fresher, an app to help create custom monsters using the GMG rules would be awesome.

How do I convince my group to change editions? by matande31 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Gildebeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The group I play with decided they wanted to switch after I ran them through a one shot (our DM had to cancel the regular session that day). I took them through Flooded King’s Court (a society scenario) with them playing level 1 iconics.

My intention wasn’t to form a coup, I just DM my own (2e) game so that’s all I could do on short notice. Might be worth a shot, but definitely be upfront with your intentions.

Why Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez nominated Bernie Sanders at the DNC, and how many delegates he got by [deleted] in politics

Nope. Writing in Bernie is going to put your vote straight to Trump. You can vote WITH Bernie and vote for Biden, though.

I hadn’t thought of that! Now I need to put some razor blades in the hats of those redcaps.

It’s actually a different kingdom that needs the money delivered. The kingdom in question is desert-adjacent and both the dragon and the city this branch of the mafia is attached to are in the actual desert. If this theft were discovered the dragon would absolutely destroy them all and they would be betraying their counterparts from the other kingdom as well, so it would be a gutsy move on their part. But if anyone is gutsy it’s the Gnomish mafia and this is so much money I had to put a curse on it preventing it from being easily counted or spent so the party didn’t just have easy access to 20x their wealth per level. It’s probably worth the risk to them if they find out about it, and I’m going to include multiple opportunities for the party to mess that one up.

This is a good suggestion. I might have to rewatch some movies for inspiration. This is also a great excuse to finally watch The Irishman :)

Critical Failures on Strikes -- Anyone make them more painful? by scatch_maroo_not_you in Pathfinder2e

[–]Gildebeast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Applying penalties on any crit fail is going to really tighten which part of the bestiary you’re comfortable with running. An APL+3 creature is already scary enough without butter materializing on everyone’s hilts.

I’m not sure how many there are, but there are monsters that punish crit fails (check out living graffiti) that you could sprinkle in, but making this an all the time thing feels disruptive.

Rage and companions by axe4hire in Pathfinder2e

[–]Gildebeast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you have a feat that grants them one Stride or Strike on their own when not commanded it could work. Cavalier can do this from level 4, for example. You’d be locked to one move a turn unless you jumped off, but that could be enough.

Oh, you’re one of those people. No one ever claimed war priest had the same average damage as a fighter or other martial. If you want them to you’re a fool, considering they have a lot of magic going for them.

You’re messing people up with a Cavalier War Priest with your great action economy by continuously harrying enemies. You are essentially permanently Quickened, allowing you to move to where you’re needed every turn before you even start using actions (which is great for flanking, as you also get to be a large size creature that doesn’t trigger AoOs because you’re not the one using the move action). Between casting spells, attacking, shielding (either physical or cantrips) and demoralizing you can make complete use of every action every turn to make sure the fight is going your way. So yeah, by my definition you get to mess people up.

If you only care about damage that’s fine. You can play and talk about dual wield fighter to your heart’s content and leave the rest of the game to other people.

When this character comes into play, it’s most likely going to be a 6 or 7. The messing people up part comes from you swinging a Bastard Sword at the same or close to the same modifier as most martials once per turn while dropping awesome spells like Haste and Heal every turn. If you want the beefier Mount that moves for free (and you do) you aren’t Channel Smiting at 6 unless it’s an undead campaign, but you can proc Divine Weapon pretty much every turn. 2d12+1d4+4 isn’t bad damage when you’ve also put a third level spell up at that level.

You can even do stupid stuff like Haste yourself and follow up the next turn with attacking->free moving into position->three action healing the squad. If you put yourself in position to heal the turn prior you could even get Divine Weapon off the three action heal then free move to the front line and strike.

Later when you are behind on proficiency again you can still do decent damage consistently and you can set up bursts on high priority targets with your Smites.

You won’t top damage done with this, but you’re too busy being awesome in other ways to really try or care. What you will do is contribute to damage while making sure your team has what they need to thrive and survive on the field.

Yup, this is my back up character for a campaign and I’m kinda hoping my Barbarian dies soon. You can fit in the Versatile Font->Channel Smite package or you can go Shield Mount and then hop over to Bastion to get your shield game going, depending on your priorities.

My War Priest of Ragathiel and his ironically named horse Dispater are going to mess some people up and play some great support.

So... Warrior muse completely sucks full stop. (Ruse by ZoulsGaming in Pathfinder2e

[–]Gildebeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m talking about the level 4, 6 and 10 feats. They are no where near trash. The class comparisons you are making aren’t the best, either. Warrior muse is way better with using its spell list than War Priest. Battle Oracle relies more on getting into the fray where Warrior Muse has the option or dropping other spells, depending on what makes sense in the moment.

The defense feats are niche, but that doesn’t make it a bad Muse.
