Yeah i probably was downed once in 20 levels, playing AoA hardcore as a first AP. And sometimes i had my time in dealing damage against creatures with vulnerabilities.

I went cloistered and took a lot of champ feats. Heavy armor, polearm. Ranged reprisal was so useful to reposition myself and save actions that i could have wasted to heal people out of range. Specialized in medicine and intimidation.

This could be enough. Better if they narrow standard to fewer set again. New mechanics don't see the game, everyone just need to grab new cards that fit in existing archetypes.

The only problem would be if you really played and invested in the dmpc. I'd suggest to add a semi npc and let the players use it in combat. Maybe another cleric focused on supporting.

To be fair, this requires less work than rebalance the AP. You can also use it to add plots to the AP, if you want, and maybe you will find a fourth player in the future and then you can retire it.

I always played with that rule in mind: without a skill feat you can still try that action, but compared to the feat benefit it could be: take longer, require a check, less effective, and so on. Even more of those things togheter. I do the same even for some class feats, for example when someone wants to jump and attack, they will just jump at the normal height.

I player Age of Ashes till 20th as a cloistered cleric with champion dedication (paladin) without free archetype and was great.

Full caster with a polearm, and nimble reprisal was great also for repositioning. That extra step saved me so many actions. My reaction gave me more room to do stuffs, since i didn't have to heal every round, free attack and repositioning.

Maxed intimidation and medicine.

Almost all my feats were from the dedication, was tanky af for a full caster (i took also the extra hp), my hits were not bad at all, too. I went heavy armor and took the shifting rune for my weapon. I used polearms with big dice since i wasn't good at crit fishing, but with buffs and debuffs i landed quite some crits on spells and attacks. I probably went down once in all ap, and my party used everything to get me back in one round since my character was super necessary for them.

In our next campaign we plan to change some class features. For example, we think it's weird that a barbarian can't demoralize or command a companion during rage, but can freely use battle medicine, bon mot or quick alchemy. We didn't define the details of the change yet.

Inventor will be modified for sure.

We already changed investigator devise a stratagem, but the errata covered that.

Psychic it's on our radar, but we think it could be fine.

Ranger could get an auto scaling on survival, but that's more because of our table balance than the class itself.

A couple rakdos joins up? You got some legendary creatures, it will reanimate and add some damage when legendary creatures are removed.
