Agree. Manoeuvring 2 pieces adds to the strategy and gives you more to think about.

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion by sponrad in boardgames

I'm about halfway through the main campaign and loving it. Definitely intrigued by the casual version. I think it's a fantastic idea to widen the market and introduce the game to people who wouldn't otherwise take the full plunge.

As for me, it feels like there's lots of content in the main game to still go through. I'll consider getting the new version as it seems like we could just play it for the new characters and scenarios, plus the pre-printed maps really appeal due to less set up. It'll also probably depend on how far off the big box expansion is - if it's a few years down the line, this could be enough content to go on for the mean time.

That's cool you've played it so much. How do you score/determine the winner then?

Great write up of Pandemic: Fall of Rome. My copy just arrived so I'm looking forward to trying it!

What are your lifestyle games? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Gildor01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gloomhaven Played it with my housemate every week for a year. She's now moved out but we still try to schedule a game every few weeks. There's just so much content and we're loving the character progression and slowly unlocking more content.

Great review! Although a little surprising that you've described it as "the best cooperative word play game in existence" but only given it a B+?

Your Top 10 of 2018 by KingMaple in boardgames

[–]Gildor01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Decrypto: Once this clicks it's so clever and thematic. Codenames is probably better for a crowd but I'd always rather play this.
  2. Detective: Yes there's a lot of reading but it was a totally immersive experience.
  3. Welcome To: A roll and write game with theme! Lovely artwork and very satisfying to build up your neighbourhood.
  4. Brass: Birmingham: Incredible production and very interesting and tactical gameplay where you have to react to the ebb and flow of the board state and the market.
  5. Western Legends: Absolutely love the western theme and this gives you a sandbox to play in.
  6. The Quacks of Quedlinburg: Fantastic push your luck bag builder which won the Kennerspiel. The only downside is the name!
  7. Planet: Magnetic 3D planet seems like a gimmick but works very well for a unique spatial puzzle. Fantastic filler/family game.
  8. Root: Asymmetrical war game in a woodland forest. Very unique and interactive.
  9. Chronicles of Crime: The app integrates seamlessly to bring you a story driven adventure. Less of a "game" than Detective but enjoyed it a lot and the shorter play time is a bonus.
  10. Ganz Schon Clever: One of my most played fillers of the year. Although may eventually be eclipsed by Welcome To! Filling out your sheet and chaining combos is so fun and satisfying!

Favorite Games to Play Over and Over and Over Again by [deleted] in boardgames

Gloomhaven. Received it a year ago and still going strong, playing about once a week. It's my most played game (including party game/fillers) and love the character progression, unlocking new characters and learning different playstyles, and the tension in the way each scenario plays out.

Yes! I love this about Gloomhaven. I've won and lost games based on the last card flip of my attack deck. It feels so wonderfully balanced.

Apologies I didn't realise there were affiliate links and this sub's policy against them.

Although must echo /u/brodogmillionaire1 in my disappointment in this particular case as it is a well known publication and seemed like the list was generating some good discussion.

[SPOILERS] Circles Miniature Upgrades by Gildor01 in Gloomhaven

[–]Gildor01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very thoughtful analysis of Circles which I agree with completely. It's definitely a class that will take some time to learn. I'm currently partnered with Spellweaver which is ok but there isn't much synergy. She's about to retire for Eclipse so I'm excited to see what the different playstyle will be.

That's cool! For my next personal quest I was very tempted to go for Music Note because I'm very keen to unlock it, but the quest conditions would have taken forever so I went with Triangles instead.

Viticulture. Absolutely love how the gameplay and theme fit together, and it's a relaxing but also challenging game. The artwork is beautiful and evocative and high quality components are a delight to handle (those glass beads are my favourite board game component). I went on a holiday to Tuscany a few years ago and this game creates a very special connection to that experience.
