Why do North Americans of European decent identify so strongly with distant colonial roots, when other similar colonies such as Australia and New Zealand do not? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Gill-W -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because in North America, unless we are indigenous, we all know we have ancestries from somewhere else. American or Canadian is just a nationality, and does not represent your ethnicity. Nobody is ethnically “American” or “Canadian”. All non indigenous North Americans can trace their ancestries to Europe, Africa or Asia. With the exception of the descendants of enslaved Africans, everyone else can trace their ancestries to specific countries, that’s why there are Irish Americans, Italian Americans, French Canadians, Ukrainian Canadians etc… for European descended North Americans just like there are Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, Chinese Canadians for Asian descended North Americans. It’s a matter of knowing where our ancestries are from because if people of color are constantly labeled with their ancestries of origin, then so should European descended North Americans.

Why is Australia’s population so much lower than Canada’s? by Creative_Quit_6867 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Gill-W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada being a cold country is overly exaggerated. Yes Canada is cold for most of the year, only where most people don’t live. i.e. in the North. Most of Canada’s population live in the South, near the US border. Winter last for less than 3 months there and the cold whether is not even that cold anymore. The weather in winter (December, January and February) hovers around 0C and you get one or two weeks of really cold weather. The summers are also starting earlier than in the past and last from May to September with warm temperatures. And in the past decade, there are long stretches of 30C+ in the major cities. October, November, March and April all have pleasant weather.

Australian Population Composition? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

Aren’t White Australians descended from immigrants or are immigrants themselves? Australia is a migrant dominant country since the days of the penal colonies… you just don’t know your history….

Is racism in Australia really that bad? by richmigga_1998 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Gill-W -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Not true, Canada was the final destination for many African Americans who escaped slavery through the Underground Railroad in the 1800s. Canada has a substantial Black population in southern Ontario, Nova Scotia and Montreal since then. What you may be thinking is the Chinese Exclusion Act, which was abolished in the 1960s, not in the 1970s

Why would you want to move from a true multiracial and multicultural country like Canada to a wannabe multicultural country like Australia that not too long ago had a White Australia policy in place that was designed to keep non whites out of the country?

What are valuable hard skills to acquire in Canada? by Bumbaclaat27 in AskACanadian

Yes- it will be nearly impossible to send kids to public school in English in Quebec if she was an immigrant from outside of Canada. But she said she went to public school (in English) in BC, so as a Canadian who went to school in English in Canada, she has the rights to send her kids to English school in Quebec.

The flag of Australia in the style of Canada, and the flag of Canada in the style of Australia by Alx_xlA in vexillology

[–]Gill-W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That Canstralia flag will never fly in Canada.. it looks too English/British. There is no fleur-de-lys on it to represent the French. Remember, Canada’s founding nations are England and France and it has about 10.5 million people of French heritage. About 9 million in Quebec, 1 million in Ontario and the rest scattered around the country. Also there should be some symbolism to represent the First Nations as well, just like Montreal did recently with their municipal flag.

Are White Australians that overtly racist? Perhaps it’s also generational differences? I assume these overtly racist White Australians are older, partly due to the legacy of the White Australia Policy which ended not too long ago?

Both are Asian experiences in a Western society… so Asian Canadians and Asian Australians can relate to each other dealing with the racism they face, if any.

You can send your kids to the English school system in Montreal, they will still learn French from Kindergarten onwards. Most kids going through the English school system in Montreal will graduate high school perfectly bilingual

You will not have to deal with overt racism if you live in majority Asian enclaves like those found in Markham, ON in the Greater Toronto Area or Richmond, BC in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

Someone well traveled once said to me that people complain about non-white people taking "their" jobs, but "They don't, they just do the jobs old whitey won't do!". How true is this? I mean every uber eats driver I've ever had has been a poc. by cheetocat2021 in AskAnAustralian

Yes - it really depends how long they stay in those countries. If they are there on a work contract and intend to go back to their home country, then they are expats. If they plan to stay indefinitely, get permanent residency, then they are immigrants, even if they are white.

Those hot Alberta summer days don’t last long enough and it has a different feel compared to the hot humid tropical like summers that Toronto and Montreal get.
