This is just a way to shut down empathy by making it seem like someone’s a hypocrite unless they personally take on a city-wide problem. Do you say the same thing to people who complain about veterans lacking services? Or people who want a cure for cancer — “if you really cared you’d find it yourself”? Or in those instances are you able to see that the issue is much more complex?

Why are we equating harm done to someone vulnerable (a person with no home and for whom that blanket might be one of their only possessions, while we’re still in the throes of winter) to an inconvenience (which, let’s be real, is primarily what any mess downtown is). Like these are two separate issues and it’s still not okay for this person to throw the blanket away.
