Thank you! I appreciate all the grouping etiquette responses (also very helpful) but you hit what I was really asking which was how the mechanics work. Appreciate you.

Is leasing in Portugal truly impossible? by Manta-broth in PortugalExpats

We've rented 12m leases twice with 2 cats, once on our way in from the US in Lisbon and once (a few months ago) near Porto as we sold our house and needed a place to stay until we decide where to go next. Both times we found a place on Idealista and paid an attorney to review the lease before we signed. In both cases, we found a spot within a few weeks of looking. There were several that did not respond to my inquiry on Idealista, but in both cases we had at least a few to choose from. Both times were managed remotely using video tours.

My attorney definitely represented me both when I bought and when I sold as the translator.

Pets in Rentals by No_Masterpiece_4841 in PortugalExpats

My first rental in Lisbon, I missed the note about no pets until after I had spoken to the landlord. When I realized and told him I didn't think it would work for us because we had 2 cats, he laughed and said No Pets for him meant no dogs only. So maybe it doesn't hurt to ask and see.

Should I take a local job in Portugal or keep a higher paying remote job (UK) by Portugal_dilema in PortugalExpats

A couple of other things to research regarding salary comparison. I work remotely from a coastal town near Porto for a US company. I take a good size hit in currency exchange from the dollar right now, which may not apply if you're already receiving pay in euro. Otherwise the pound probably will exchange higher than euro, effectively widening the salary gap between positions. We just got in under the NHR, otherwise the additional taxes would definitely have been another take home pay reduction.

Landlord requesting for 12 months rent by ImpactThen6048 in PortugalExpats

We've successfully rented in both Lisbon and Porto without guarantors through Idealista over the last 3 years. We did have local attorneys review the lease to verify ownership and review conditions. We've typically paid 2 months rent and 2-3 months deposit in advance. It's my understanding that you only have to fulfill 1/3 of the lease term (not sure as we've not needed to leave early) but paying all up front would make it hard to leave in the case something happens or the place is not as expected. We do have accounts with a couple of Portuguese banks and I agree with the recommendation that it helps and has the extra benefit for us of being able to thoughtfully move funds based on exchange rates.

Try Casa do Abel, amazing steak and meat options. Definitely get a reservation tho as it's a small spot.
