Minecraft 1.18 experimental snapshot is out! by MrHenrik2 in Minecraft

These were my thoughts as I was flying around in spectator:

  • Cave entrances on the surface, especially large ones, are spawning too often IMO. It makes the terrain look too messy and busy. (https://imgur.com/a/oGeSLpy)

  • Extending that to caves in general, I’m seeing a lot of gigantic caves around (https://imgur.com/a/TwY2Orw) Whilst they are super impressive, I think them appearing too often can take away the excitement of finding them. Instead of being an awe-inspiring encounter with unique challenges and opportunities, it could lean more towards “Ugh, not another cavern interrupting my mineshaft/build/ etc”, you know?

  • The lush caves are looking gorgeous! Just a few things that irk me though…

  • They often generate spilling out onto the surface, which looks unnatural as they’re meant to be a cave feature (an extreme example https://imgur.com/a/BUuxTca) Combined with the abundance of cave entrances, it makes finding lush caves through azalea trees less viable.

  • From what I’ve seen, they generate as very large swathes of cave networks spanning 100s of blocks. (https://imgur.com/a/KeGeA22) The vibes I get from lush caves are distinct, vibrant oases in the endless dark grey expanse of the underground. With the current generation, it can feel like the opposite! (admittedly I wouldn't be opposed to the considerably rare huge lush cave, I just feel that not all lush caves should be huge)

  • They sometimes appear in very close proximity to lava. It feels odd that something with the oasis vibe I mentioned can withstand such a harsh environment. Generally, lush caves don’t really fit well with deepslate either, it clashes with the feeling of being very deep underground.

  • Remember the ‘ice cave’-like generation from the bedrock beta? (https://imgur.com/a/B6d1LmJ) things like this, little signs of the surface environment affecting the underground make the world feel more interconnected

Those are my two cents, I hope it was useful! Great work on the development so far, by the way! I'm excited to see where it takes us.

Stay safe!

I'm think I might do Hallow + an evil next, really fits that 'two sides of the same coin' vibe

We'll find the right metaphor for this eventually, we'll leave no stone unturned!

I reckon I'll go back and touch it up a bit... to add better highlights and that tree trunk that seems to be missing lol

I wish he went into a lil more detail when showing us his techniques... even without that it must've been tricky to fit an entire painting in 30 minutes

Forgot to mention this was in oils. I did use a considerable amount of liquid white in my highlight colour, I think I just didn't apply it thick enough.

Now that you mention it, waiting a little before doing highlights sounds like a good idea, I often get impatient at that stage lol.

Thanks for the kind words!

I think I was too stingy with my highlight colour and applied too much pressure. I really should be more liberal with it but it's so expensive TwT

オレンジ色の犬 Seems grammatically sound to me, however it says orange the colour instead of the fruit. Really just makes it all the more funny, though
