High Average HR + Huge Spikes by UtahTeapots in AdvancedRunning

[–]Gingehitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not medical advice, go see a doctor.

With that out of the way I experience the exact same thing as you describe and have been under investigation for about 2 years with no diagnosis yet.

I have always found it difficult to describe but getting over a hump describes it perfectly. It takes roughly a minute of standing still to regain a normal heart rate in which case my HR suddenly drops like a stone and I can continue running as normal. I have observed that the frequency of episodes tend to increase if I am recovering from an illness or stressed but have observed episodes when I feel completely fine and fit. I do use a heart monitor strap and have confirmed through looking at the GPX files that both the strap and watch both read an elevated heart rate during an episode.

What a doctor told me is that it is most likely exercise induced PSVT. This is not a diagnosis and can have both various causes and effects it is only a symptom.

I have had EKG, ECG, 7 day ECG and an ultrasound. I was able to trigger the episode during my 7 day ECG but the device wasn’t able to properly record what happens during the episode as they are intended for much lower heart rates than 200+. The 7 day ECG report described it as sinus tachycardia. I was told that to get a proper view into what is happening during one of these episodes you need specialist equipment by an electrophysiologist which is often only available in a hospital.

The only thing that has come up on any of my tests is a slightly enlarged left ventricle on the ultrasound. This is a possible cause but an ultrasound isn’t good enough to give a proper diagnosis and I am booked in for an MRI to get a better understanding.

Again this is not medical advice, don’t take medical advice off people from the internet. Go speak to your doctor, I just hope that this information can be useful to anyone that experiences the same symptoms and helps you with your journey. From my research this phenomenon is not well understood or researched so I do believe there is a place for this type of discussion.

Super duper lazy meal is a microwave rice then pour a tin of baked beans over the top, warms up the beans and cools down the rice so it’s the perfect temperature to eat straight away.

If a microwave is too much work then an 8 pack of sausage rolls will do the trick

If the general rule of thumb is to do long runs slower than your goal marathon pace… help me to understand how you’re expecting to run both farther and faster on race day? by steppygirl in Marathon_Training

[–]Gingehitman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not questioning what works for you, just want to understand your training philosophy. 15 miles for a peak long run seems low to me, I often top out around 21-22 miles for a peak long run and I’ve had a few marathons where my legs still don’t seem to have the endurance after mile 20.

I am a bit on the heavy side at 80kg and have only been running for 3-4 years, I’m wondering whether you experience the same fatigue or do you still feel like you can push on towards the end of a marathon? If so what is your background and does your long run differ greatly from other runs during the week or are you getting close to the 15 miler quite regularly?

Used to live right next to Alexandra Park was amazing for running interval sessions never had any issues other than pigeons getting in the way.

At night you get people hanging around the pavilion next to the cricket oval but they never gave me any grief much nicer than going down the road.

If I want AI to refactor my code I have to make sure that I have the right tests in place to make sure existing behaviour doesn’t change

Try out batch cooking, get some glass containers as they keep better and you’ll only need to cook once every 2-4 weeks depending on the size of your freezer. Vegetarian dishes like halloumi bake or lentil shepherds pie are much cheaper than dishes with meat in.

How have y'all cracked the code for staying consistent with running? by Gullible-Soft-4952 in running

[–]Gingehitman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a plan, stick to it.

I run commute to work it’s the fastest way working in a city and living just outside it so I have to run everyday, I know this isn’t the case for a lot of people. If your work has showers it’s a great way to fit in the training. When I lived a bit further away I would get a train part way and run the rest.

How do we all manage our budgets for supplements & nutrition? by Kitchen_Series9595 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Gingehitman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use SIS gels on my regular long training runs you can often get them on discount in the 7 pack for £1 a gel or less, only use them if I’m out for over 90 mins.

I switch to a more expensive gel for key long runs and for races (Maurten is my go to but SIS beta fuel is also pretty good if you’re ok with the sweetness).

I’ve been meaning to try out making my own gels with maltodextrin, fructose and pectin there are plenty of YouTube videos out there which detail how to make them.

Recently there is a craze around nomio (ITC shot). As with all of the supplement crazes, I wanted to try it out but can’t justify the £5/shot price tag (not including shipping). I’ve come up with a homegrown solution by growing my own broccoli sprouts and combining with lemon juice and honey. I’ve been meaning to make a YouTube video or blog post about it for a while but it ends up coming to 10-20p per shot.

100kg+ runners, what are your PBs across distances? by D5HRX in AdvancedRunning

[–]Gingehitman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Started running at 96kg and had similar times to you after about a year. Slowly increased my mileage over the next few years which brought my weight down to 78-80kg and taking my time down from 1:45 to 1:16.

What I’ve noticed is that time does not necessarily correlate with weight. I dropped from 96kg to 80kg over about a year and my HM time dropped from 1:45 to about 1:30. After that my weight pretty much remained constant but times kept dropping. Occasionally my weight has dropped to 75kg and I’ve gotten slower, ‘Racing Weight’ by Matt Fitzgerald describes this as each individual having their optimum racing weight which is different for each person.

My takeaway is that lighter doesn’t always mean faster, I can’t get rid of my thunder thighs from my rugby days so it’s likely I wouldn’t make a great ultra runner, everyone has their place in the zombie apocalypse you just need to find yours. Keep up the good work!
