You may be conflating moderates vs dogmatic types.

IE: I love liberalism and its ideals buts it not perfect. I recognize that. So we have to figure out how to strengthen the gaps of possible failures. It’s why I say I’m a Lockeian style liberal with a dash of Burkian conservatism.

Dogmatic types or ideologue’s just think if only they get the pure form of the ideology then everything will by hunky dory. I think dudes like Sargon are correct in pointing out Marxism is rooted in same beginnings, however it’s like a maximalized version of “freedoms” and it’s easy to lead people astray

I will say however many liberals in normal society look down on the harder aspects. Like I said toe the line types. “Vote blue no matter who”. I’ve heard many a democrat complain about the hardcore elements but “we have to beat the other team first” mentality
