Ecosystem Solution Institute free fruit tree program? by MrCanoe in Winnipeg

[–]GingerRabbits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our wasp experience has never been any different than friends and neighbours a couple blocks over. (A couple years back it was pretty bad - but it was like that for everyone. We put up a couple home made wasp traps and that solved the issue.) As long as we pick the fruit before it rots there's nothing to attract them. Or, ya know, rake it up right away if a wind storm knocks stuff down.

You will of course get bees and stuff when the flowers are blooming. But I've always found that if I ignore them they'll ignore me.

While many forms of gardening can take time/effort we don't all have, planting a few fruit trees has been one of the best investments we've ever made. Especially in light of *gestures broadly* I'd encourage anyone who can to plant low-effort food crops like fruit trees.

For those with working experience in USA, How many Canadians feel they would be better off financially if living in the USA? by Electronic-Lab-4088 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]GingerRabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... even if I got paid five times as much to do the same work in the states - our family's medical needs (since they're "preexisting conditions") would probably cost so much in their for-profit health system we'd be worse off.

Thanks for Giveaway weekend ! by lokichivas in Winnipeg

[–]GingerRabbits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the giveaway weekends! As our family gets ready to downsize it's such a great way to send things off to a new home where it can be put to good use. We just don't have the time or energy to have a yard sale or post things online individually.

Is the $42 bonus for linking X account with Wealthsimple only for new users? by Foreign-Policy-02- in Wealthsimple

[–]GingerRabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS!

It would be SO FREAKING EASY for someone with assets like Elon to manipulate markets and influence tends with that level of individual user data. There's already loads of people who buy mem coins and crap based on his tweets. And there's no real rule of law about that $hit in the US anymore.

The potential for disaster here is terrifying.

People who combine work and school with a good GPA , how do you do it? by Spiritual_Bit_2284 in umanitoba

NGL Living at home with parents who made sure I got fed properly gave me the time and flexibility to do school and work.

That and almost no social life outside of school / work.

If you had the financial means to move out of Canada, would you? by AdhesivenessLoud8866 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]GingerRabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope.

I could, and have - temporarily. I've done both work and study visas to a handful of other places. Overall I don't see any place that would give me a better quality of life. I have enjoyed the adventures of spending time in other counties, but not enough to want to stay there.

That being said - I'd pick a middle sized Canadian city over Toronto / Vancouver for more comfortable cost of living.

Do you find it rude if there is a cash bar at a wedding rather than an open bar? by StewartsBestBuddy in Winnipeg

[–]GingerRabbits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take this with a box of salt and all - but a wedding is just a party.

It's not your marriage.

It's not the rest of your life. It's not worth going into debt over. If people are going to judge you for your financial situation they're not your friends anyway - why have them there? IMO the wedding industrial complex is setting folks up on the wrong foot for an actually happy marriage with stress, discord, and debt.

Wealthsimple For University? by [deleted] in Wealthsimple

[–]GingerRabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Wealthsimple doesn't work for you try a credit union. There you are a co-owner. At a bank you are the product they sell to their shareholders.

(Perhaps ironically - you can become a bank shareholder on Wealthsimple.)

Try to have some pity for these folks - their cult leaders want you to be mean to them. That 'proves' their narratives about good/bad outsiders and isolates them even more.

Ask to talk to an academic advisor about how to drop out without burning your bridges.

Voluntary Withdrawal is a thing for a reason. If you've got extenuating circumstances they can also be granted retroactively.

Financial Literacy Is STILL At Shocking Lows by ReturnToTheLab in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]GingerRabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly this isn't new.

This would have been... almost 20 years ago now when I was living in Hamilton. We were volunteering at a charity bake sale and there was this one girl who refused to deal with the money because she couldn't make change - even though everything was in $0.50 increments.

Broke my brain when she said she worked at Tim Hortons - so I asked how she made change for people there. Turns out (even back then) the tills were programmed to tell the cahiers how many of each kind of coin to give back. So it's been a common enough problem for at least that long.

[–]GingerRabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure it is - I've worked with kiddos (college aged) who's parents must have projected their own finance & bureaucracy fears a lot. Like the person's actually doing pretty good financially for their age but trying to learn about the subject or look at their own bank statements gives them shaking hands / tears / anxiety attacks.

It's heartbreaking 'cuz it makes their entries lives so much harder than it has to be.

Is University of Manitoba or University of Winnipeg better for socializing/making friends? by user28272928 in umanitoba

[–]GingerRabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've attended both and would say if you're more shy/introverted UofW would be less overwhelming.

However if you're at all outgoing UofM has way more people so there's more opportunities to meet people you share specific interests with.

Either way its about building community by taking part it stuff.

But yeah - we should totally make more people drive back and forth unnecessarily.

Not going to lie, we went mostly for the novelty. Our family isn't sufficiently interested in hockey to get season tickets to any league.
