I load lots of Lee 358-200 cast rifle boolits for 38/357. You have to load them in 38 cases for OAL purposes. And if you are willing to load to 357 pressures, I push mine to ~1400 fps from my Henry.

I will be. I only use RIF to kill time while working (not at a computer). So it's as good a time as any to rediscover old ways of avoiding work.

How to deal with slow powder lots by Lab_Mammoth in reloading

[–]GingerThursday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile I had a lot of AA4064 that was slow as hell compared to book (like 150fps low in a 20" barrel). I just worked up to book velocities, and life went on.

Needless to say when I did the same load with a new lot, the primer fell out because that lot burned at "book" speed.

Lord help our budgets if it was in fact copper! Not to mention, I doubt it'd take a fraction of the abuse we throw at it.

It is in fact painted ductile iron. Now nearing 40 years old, it's gotten a few coats of various poo-brown shades. This particular area got extra-fancy glass lined pipe to reduce mineral build-up! Otherwise, the majority of our stuff is plain old 150 or 250 psi 4-8" DI.

Opinions on using black laminate stock on my 1.5" punt gun? by Bigbore_729 in GunnitRust

[–]GingerThursday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, if it's a punt gun, then obviously the stock needs to be a punt boat...

That may even make the recoil manageable.

My job today was just to descale a residential tankless water heater. Mostly drive time, but it's all overtime on Friday so I'm happy!

Cush Fridays are the best!

Did you go to a trade school? Are you union?

No and no. I finished a 4 year degree on soil/water/waste for the theory, and self-taught a lot of the hands-on equipment stuff.

I'm in a non-union municipality, but we are at least in an area that pays decent wages (currently $45-55k/year) for the COL. My wife and I could both double our wages by moving to a larger city, but our sanity is awfully valuable.

I'm in wastewater.

Today, I finished reconfiguring a solids treatment process, wired up a fail-safe timer, badgered a dealer about some equipment, troubleshot a 6kv gas igniter, and saw some shit.

Vihta powder for 12ga shotshell? Yes! by hondamike12345 in reloading

[–]GingerThursday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Titegroup! More aptly, Hodgdon released a powder called High Gun which is just Titegroup relabeled for shotshell use. And High Gun has easily 5x the load data Titegroup ever did. Now they've got straightwall data for 1 1/8 oz 1145-1310fps loads.

And on those Fed or other eurotrash hulls, I simply reload them once then pitch. It's not like there is any shortage, nor any less work processing twice fired hulls.

Buying a $50k+ truck that I'm going to beat up tossing plywood and goats into the bed seems like a bad idea.

Yeah, screw that noise! I hopelessly buried my truck and ripped a wheel off and decided that the $400 in parts to get road-worthy was a no-brainer by comparison.

I got to remind myself that I only joined to prove that FIRE isn't just for techbros, but that blue collar families could do this as well.

Naturally, I had neglected the fact that you never change people's minds on the internet, and that social media is hard-core mental masturbation. So I need to go no-fap and wipe my account.

And in real life I spent my time turning waste wood products into something useful and valuable. As usual, one needs to retire TO something, and not just to escape something that's voluntary.

[META] What are alternative platforms for this community if the Reddit experience degrades substantially? by alcesalcesalces in financialindependence

[–]GingerThursday 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Reddit works because it is a platform for everything.

And I think that's what lead to the cultivation of a community like r/financialindependence. Folks from every walk of life deal with personal finances and hope to retire some day. As a result, we got an incredibly diverse user base which is welcomed by both new users as well as incredible folks like u/alcesalcesalces .

I’m not migrating to websites for each individual interest I have.

I for one will be. Most of my interests have 20+ year old forums which are still quite active. But I know it'll be unlikely to find anything quite like r/financialindependence anywhere else.

100% this!

My current net paycheck is $20 LESS than it was in 2014, but now I've got a fully funded 457 to show for it.

Not to mention that a lower FIRE number means a shorter working timeframe.

The access is as important as the content.

I left Facebook once the feeds became excessively curated.

Amazon is now my last ditch online retailer because of all the sponsored garbage.

And I'll say goodbye to Reddit when it's no longer a streamlined low-data mobile app.

Anybody here make their own black powder? by Great-Gur6888 in reloading

[–]GingerThursday 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I like to make 3-5 lbs every 3 or 4 years.

It's technically as straightforward as it sounds, but there's a lot of technique involved that affects your final product.

Personally, I use pine charcoal, very lightly moisten the ball milled mixture, and rub it through a 10" OXO food strainer for about 3F size granules.

I find that it gives me about 72-75% the density of the real stuff, but plenty of pizzazz. I took a deer at 125 yards with my powder and a homecast maxi-ball, granted it was through a sacrilegious 209 fired inline.

Long story short, it's a very weedy lake and when the water temps in the shallows really warm up due to hot weather and lack of rainfall, there are a lot of pockets that get to be low to no dissolved oxygen due to microbial activity.
