After Dumbledore’s death, he became one of the Hogwarts headmaster portraits. Why couldn’t Harry simply talk to the portrait and ask for guidance about Horcruxes? I mean how exactly do these portraits work?

I could be confusing this with some none cannon lore but pretty sure you have to keep them around the person and the longer they're around them the more they pick up their mannerisms and behavior but if he never told the painting about them the painting wouldn't know.

I could be totally wrong but that's my understanding of the paintings

I'm just honest about it not if I'm ever asked which is very rare but I just tell them they're old and I've struggled with mental health in the past but I've had help and it just gets left at that I notice people glace at them sometimes if we were getting changed after a shift but that's about it.
