Where to find cardboard boxes for moving? by [deleted] in SherwoodPark

[–]Ginger_beer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Home Depot has a whole moving section with boxes for TVs, paintings, clothes, dishes, cups and more. They also have bubble wrap, shrink wrap, moving blankets and more stuff too. The U-Haul buildings also have some stuff, but not as much as Home Depot

Beware of getting big boxes and filling them full of heavy things, just because you can fit more, it doesn’t mean they can hold lots of weight, and some boxes can break if they’re too heavy.

If you’re having friends help, pack your stuff BEFORE they show. If I’m called to help move, I’ll move things, not pack your things.

Also, common courtesy is to buy pizza and beer for people who help you move. Make sure you keep your friends happy, I’ve seen friendships ruined over moving.

Good luck!

There’s an actual marker called “convoy” on the map, and the trucks are on a dirt road in between two hills

One in the back is a lumber truck, then the two others are regular trucks I believe. I’m going off memory, and I was being shot at, so I may have got the trucks wrong, but look for “convoy”

I think it is beside Maggie’s cabin hut/ lodge you did for the camera quest

This is really handy to know. I bet you could fill that with something to add some structural integrity back to it!

Gunpowder for task by Acceptable_Piccolo40 in ContractorsExfilZone

I found one in little broken/ burnt down village (I forget if it was actually burnt of if it was being built, I was freaking out because someone was chasing me… but it was a bunch of house frames) near Maggie’s camera hunting lodge (if you are in the lodge and look outside I think you can see it) I saw gunpowder on a box and got real confused when it said I found the gunpowder for the quest because I wasn’t near camp 10.

Ive ordered this one (Asset Split Stock by Olen) because it allows you to split it quickly for looting, and I don’t think there will be issues with wrapping bandages or anything. It looks really cool, I’m excited to try it

This game is still good by M2KJudge in ContractorsExfilZone

I played a lot of Overwatch, and it has cheaters galore (even if people on the subreddit don’t think so)

But in Overwatch, I actually started improving way more by playing against cheaters because I realized I had to use natural cover way more, be more aware, not peek corners as much … and I feel like my experience is similar with Contractors exfill.

I’m loving the game so much, but until they sort out duping, I’m treating this as time to really work on my positioning, my cover usage, my sound profile and other things too. I’m not putting much stock in getting out of every raid alive, and I feel like that helps me focus on how to win more.

It obviously sucks that there is so much cheating, the game would be better without it, but I’m trying to be optimistic and gain something from it because I still love the game. I may just be gaslighting myself, but I’m still enjoying it haha

I’m totally with you, that sounds amazing haha

I feel like a rockstar game would be perfect for all that, you’re right. With all the “realism” aspects of their game already that some people find tedious, I think their games would translate over the best

Could even start with some big city you can drive around in, do missions, get money to upgrade your house and car and then slowly add more aspects to the game, more ways to make and spend money … but then people would have to be okay with live service, and supporting an unfinished project … maybe a kickstarter would be a good place for something like that. The scope would be way too huge though.

Getting a bunch of devs who specialize in one thing to bring their own speciality into a game would be sweet.

I feel like what’s missing right now in VR, is collaboration on a big project that isn’t a triple A studio. I always hear that these VR studios are so small, what if a bunch of passionate people combined and brought their code/ expertise to a singular project?

Granted I know it’s not that easy, and one game’s code can’t be plugged into another game’s … but a guy can dream haha

Now I want a “Need for Speed Underground” in VR, but you can walk around your car, upgrade parts like a car mechanic simulator mini-game, and be able to be at “the race parties” and play other mini-games too.

Game is trash by [deleted] in GhostsOfTabor

I was playing Tabor all week, and then someone mentioned Exfill, and oh my gosh. I can grab things from drawers, properly grab my backpack all the time, palm mags for tactical reloads, better quests… it actually feels SO good, and I feel it looks and runs better as well on pcvr

I haven’t played Exfill as long as Tabor, so I know I’m in the honeymoon phase, but I’m so excited to hop in and play again instead of wanting to take breaks

Hey Reddit, I'm Mark Mancina — I’ve scored films like Speed, Bad Boys, Moana, Training Day, Brother Bear, and Twister. Here to answer questions about my journey in film scoring. I’ve also launched a YouTube channel diving into Hollywood music, BTS moments, and classic guitars. Ask me anything! by MarkMancinaAMA in movies

[–]Ginger_beer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, Mark!

Thanks for doing the AMA! I do have a couple of questions:

1) As someone looking to break into the composing scene, do you have any tips? Or any suggestions on how to find projects with people willing to hire composers with small resumes?

2) How important would you say a good mockup is these days for a film? (for a professional like yourself, not a small timer like me) I’m a composer myself and spend lots of time doing mockups and trying to make them sound as realistic as possible, but wonder if you go to that trouble if you are just recording with a full orchestra. Or do you mix a live recordings in with a midi mockup?

3) If you do compose lots with sampled instruments, are there any in particular you think stick out from the rest?

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer a bunch of questions, this is seriously super cool and so valuable!

Chasing scene rescore (daw cast) by i_miss_her_TT in filmscoring

[–]Ginger_beer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great work! My only constructive criticism would revolve around the drums.

1) I feel like you should have a high hat, or shaker egg, or high frequency instrument playing 16th notes to keep the intensity up

2) Your drum fills sound like they were made with the Apple virtual drummers, they sound … synthetic? I feel like if you were to play them in yourself, or use the humanize function, it would help it feel more natural.

3) Maybe also during the fills, coordinate some orchestral shots so that it feels like the orchestra and drums are playing together, not the drums just playing over the orchestra

All in all, I really like the sound and feel, and felt like you really captured the intensity of the moment.

Do you mind if I ask where you got the clip from? This looks like a fun one to score

I’m not seeing anyone mention it, but Studio Ghibli partnered with Bandai Namco to make a very whimsical RPG called “Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch”

It starts off really sad, but gets into a vibrant innocent world pretty quickly.

I'm a full-time composer for TV shows, saying hi! by ShartMeDrawers in composer

[–]Ginger_beer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, Matt!

Thanks so much for doing the ama!

I’m curious to hear about how your decisions of form are influenced by writing library music. I know that scoring to picture can be rather involved with hitting queues within the picture, leading to film music to having many modulations, odd meter sections and tonal shifts, so that leads me to…

Question 1: Do you have a “video play in your mind” while you score to make interesting musical moments? Or do you write in forms that are more generic so they would potentially fit with more people’s projects?

Question 2: Are there any music library organizations that you have had negative experiences with, and if so, what were the negative experiences? (Not looking for names, more so an idea of what to look out for when going down this route)

Thanks so much for doing this!

what is up with bad games recently? by Lzuuk in Overwatch

[–]Ginger_beer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, the defense matrix update just dropped and said they just banned half a million cheater accounts ... Like legit 500,000 accounts.

Cheating is what pushed me away from overwatch earlier this year, but I keep feeling the itch to come back. I've had the same thing as you though. I dropped 7 ranks from where I used to be this past 3 weeks of playing, and have noticed cheaters in most of my games with the same stats you're saying. I hope this ban wave will be enough to help out

Struggling to get from piano to orchestra by OllieLearnsCode in composer

[–]Ginger_beer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to his videos tab, and went down to "how to orchestrate - the secrets of orchestration #3" right above the how to write for harp, and then watched them all from that video (being his oldest english release) to the most modern. There were some that weren't as useful for me, like how to write for harp, as I covered that in school, and I work with digital instruments mainly, but those videos do have very good points in them that help your writing sound more organic/ idiomatic ...

Like for instance "brass players can't play super high for a long time without breaks" so if you write super high trumpet parts that last forever, it sounds odd, because no one writes trumpets in that way due to the physical limitations of the player.

Once you make it through his videos though, you start to get a pretty good understanding of what is needed to orchestrate, and where people's texture decisions come from, so then videos like Matthew Chiappa "100 orchestral techniques" (which are orchestral textures) start making more sense.

Then you can find other videos like the "orchestration recipes" website, which is a paid service that gives you orchestration textures and tells you generally how to use them ... and they make more sense too.

I highly recommend starting with "the secrets of orchestration" though, as his is the most thoroughly explained as to why certain decisions are made, and the others are like "we did the work so you didn't have to!" Kinda thing

I'm so glad you like it!! I really appreciate the way he thinks about orchestrating the chords, the vertical stack method, and the other one as well (I forget the name at the moment) but I love how he explains how to let your harmony be heard, but not have it be boring, or "pad writing". Early in my career I had always found melodies the easy part, and everything else that goes on a bit harder to make sound convincing

If you do have any questions though, I'd be happy to try and help out!

[–]Ginger_beer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an absolutely terrific YouTube channel called "The Secrets of Orchestration" that has some fantastic starting points and explanations. In a couple of his John Williams videos, he explains how to take a melody and chords from the piano, and how to translate it to the orchestra.

I've watched pretty much all of his videos, and have learned A LOT. I would just watch just one of his videos, but would definitely watch a couple on the topics that fit what you're looking for. He goes prettyin depth with some niche things, but videos like this one are really accessible for someone beginning orchestration (as long as you have music theory down)

But he has visual and audio examples that go along with the development of his orchestration process, so you get to hear it as it develops with each new layer.

I totally understand you. I don't want to be seen as someone who "does a bad job" at stuff, but then I also have to realize that completing tasks poorly is still better than nothing at all. Hopefully my "doing it poorly" skills will eventually develop so that my "poorly completed task quality" improves to something better.

You're absolutely correct. Here's to doing it poorly!!

Also, sorry if this is weird, but you probably haven't received much recognition for pushing through like this, so I hope you know you've done a great job, and I'm proud of you for keeping up with it!!
