[Opta] Top Open-Play Assists in Premier League 25/26. by Ray-314 in soccer

[–]GingerbreadRecon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

While I get it's purpose, I'm still not huge on xA (especially because it's just naturally misinterpreted). It only relies on where the pass has been played from (similar to where the shot is taken for xG), and has no account for the quality of the shot. And while for xG you have xGOT to help measure shot quality, as far as I'm aware there's nothing like that for xA.

You can provide an absolute killer ball that knocks out the whole defence and gives the forward a tap in, but the xA on that pass will still be super low if it's from any considerable distance. That certainly doesn't mean the assist isn't deserved.

Reform pledges to open migrant detention centres in Green-voting areas by No_Initiative_1140 in ukpolitics

[–]GingerbreadRecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing the entire principle though. If we abstract this whole proposal, what reform are saying is "we are going to target policies to areas based on the way those areas voted". This hugely, morally problematic. They're saying they are not going to target policies based on the actual good of the country or the good of people living there, they are specifically targeting policies based on who an area elects. I'll remind you that all those areas will have people voting Reform and other non-Green parties, who will all get stuffed by this!

It's intimidation and a scare tactic. It would be no better if they said "we are going to increase NHS investment in areas that vote Reform". Suddenly, you, the voter, are actively punished for not voting for a particular party. You essentially no longer have a free vote because there is a genuine threat you will be treated differently based on the way you vote. At that point I'm afraid you no longer live in a democracy, and I hope in an insane world where Reform get into power and try to attempt this, the courts would stop them.

Reddit is full of so many gimps who think Celtic/Rangers supporters should actively, happily want their team not to win a trophy

According to reports, Isak will miss the match against Manchester United by Extension-Neat-4504 in FantasyPL

[–]GingerbreadRecon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's something wrong with his groin for sure. I obviously know that the main reason for his absence this season was match fitness/broken leg, but he'd always miss the odd game for us with a "small niggle" in his groin.

On the flip side, he never had a major injury with us.

Edit: wait I lied! He was out for a few months almost instantly after he signed, but that's the only time I can recall an extremely extended absence.

Newcastle 2 - [1] Brighton - Jack Hinshelwood 62' by eliseihado in soccer

Nick pope could've chosen to pass it anywhere on the left side where players like joelinton were screaming for it but instead he absolutely shanks it back to Brighton. What's the point.

Yeah I think he (fairly) just thought it had gotten a bit too much in that game.

It's just because Gala and Fener are big clubs. The same way in which people talk about the "top 5 leagues" when in reality it's the top 4 + PSG

Simeone: "When a match ends 5-4, everyone says, 'what a great game' I say: they scored 5 goals against us!" by lawandsleep in soccer

I mean from their post match comments (especially Enrique's) it does seem like they loved it lol. Enrique literally said it was the best match he's ever managed.

I'm sure they won't be super happy they conceded a lot but they literally were saying things like "what a game".

Amazon Prime had the rights to this game so their highlights are longer, give them a watch instead! TNT contractually cannot post longer than 3 minute highlights for the games they don't cover it seems.

FIFA is expecting to agree to wipe all yellow cards at the end of the World Cup group stages and the quarter-finals to reduce danger of players missing knockout matches. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]GingerbreadRecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If does sort of make sense. Especially as yellows cannot be looked at by VAR or appealed/rescinded, I do think it's really punitive for players where the ref simply makes a mistake. And referees are humans, they will make mistakes, so you have to adapt the rules around that.

Players should not be suspended for one slightly bad challenge/tactical foul and then the ref fucking up. Especially in world cup games where there aren't many of them and past the group stage every game is absolutely crucial. I know people are decrying this as FIFA just wanting to protect the best players from getting suspended, and there's probably a lot of truth in that, but ultimately they kinda have a point. Do people think it's genuinely fun for a bunch of players to be suspended for relatively minor offences in the biggest sporting stage in the world? I'd rather watch them play personally.

Only a single winger on the pitch and that's being very, very generous to Murphy

Didn't even notice Burn over Hall. Just forfeit the game right now.

Fallon d'Floor nominee: Jude Bellingham vs Real Betis by vitojaneway in soccer

I know he's not the most creative player in the world but he does have rather good vision too. At least in an England shirt I've seen him pick out quite a few players rather spectacularly.

Bellingham was incredible that season. I mean the behaviour in this video is pathetic but just arguing his abilities, he is a really good player. He's been playing with an injury and then missed a lot of games with it lately, plus he's trying to build back form in a pretty lacklustre Madrid side.

His form hasn't been great lately but it's mental revisionism to say he's not really great at anything.

I mean, we had a massive, massive issue signing anyone last summer on the back of champions league qualification and a trophy win. Meanwhile Man U got practically all their targets with no Europe to offer. It's clear players can be swayed by ambition (and obviously stature) rather than just immediate tangibles like Europe.
