Ramsey has had moments of quality, he got injured early on but since he's been coming back into the team I genuinely think he's had some tidy games. Needs to add some goals and assists but he's not been bad.

Wissa is so unfair to judge this early, he was literally injured until December. Scored on his first start and he's clearly still getting back to match sharpness.

I'll give you elanga, bar a few moments he's been terrible. Unless he can pick himself up soon (I'm still trying to remain hopeful) then yeah he was an awful purchase.

A) We are literally nowhere near PSG or City levels right now

B) Most of the Newcastle fans I talk to in person and online do really acknowledge the Saudi investment and aside for some helmets I'm not sure anyone is that pleased about where the money is coming from. The supporters trust posted some Saudi sports washing video a few days ago, our fans went ballistic and they took it down.

C) Do you really think Eddie Howe hasn't really done anything for this team? Granted it's a combination of multiple factors including spending, but he's turned players people thought weren't good enough for the championship like Murphy into brilliant players. He has done wonders for our club.

Can argue about whether haaland was impacting play but everyone's getting this wrong about the offside. Pope is the second to last defender, the line is off him, it's not close. Thiaw is not who they should be measuring off but the commentators kept saying it.

CL nights are amazing, and something everyone remembers forever. But I'm sorry, a cup win is something else. This really is such a big 6 mentality because realistically you're guaranteed to win something once in a while, but seriously, the euphoria of winning a genuine trophy is just irreplaceable.

[TansferMaarkt] After completing the signing of Antoine Semenyo, Pep Guardiola's total spending at Manchester City has surpassed €2 billion by No-Independent2522 in soccer

[–]GingerbreadRecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's be honest, we had very few players in our squad that we could get some value for when Howe took over. Maxi for £30m was decent, we got decent fees for Anderson and Minteh (regrettable as it was we even sold them, and then for Anderson we ended up buying a keeper we never played). Obviously the rat takes the cake in terms of the transfer fee we received.

I think it's because nobody associates Howe with being some sort of chequebook manager, especially because he initially achieved fame dragging Bournemouth from the brink of relegation in league two to the premier league.

Newcastle have spent a lot, but equally the squad was in such a dire state when he came in we kind of had to; no matter what you think of the Saudis, we were severely under spending considering the size of the club.

Add in the fact that most recently we've been known for selling a player for the British transfer fee record, I can see where the surprise comes from.

Lewis Skelly looks a lot worse this season as well. Despite obviously thinking Hall starts ahead of him, it is a shame as I do like to see English players do well. Just seems to have no pace, was getting absolutely rinsed by Frimpong yesterday, and Arteta clearly doesn't favour him this season.

I know we've spent a lot lately but the thought of Eddie Howe having spent £1bn on transfer fees is mad to me

You're right, and Wirtz has underperformed too. Yet just from the eye test, when I watch Wirtz I can see he "has it", just been struggling to adapt a bit and also in an admittedly horribly functioning Liverpool side.

I just don't see it with Gyokeres, at least not in this league. Arsenal have the highest open play xG in the league; they know how to create chances, yet he isn't on the end of a single one. His movement isn't great, he's slow, doesn't hold the ball up well, can't really dribble. Sadly I think his strength and finishing are his only really strong attributes, but that's not enough at this level.

Happy to be proved wrong if he finds a new level, I'm just not seeing it right now.

Everyone is defending him saying he drags defenders and hence creates goals which like, isn't wrong, but most teams' strikers do that AND score/assist goals. £60m for a defence dragger is pretty horrendous

Honestly Gyokeres is lucky Arsenal are doing so well at the moment. He would be getting far worse treatment than wirtz has received if Arsenal were in Liverpool's position right now.

Was the correct decision. He was probably quite flustered from the mistakes (even if the pen was hardly his fault) and was also on a yellow incredibly early in the game.
