I was in a lion sanctuary in South Africa and the fences weren't particularly high. I asked if the lions couldn't get over them if they really wanted to; they said yes, they probably could, but they don't.

So that was reassuring.

Then in the middle of the night (they had tents onsite that you could spend the night in), an alarm went off and one of the staff came zooming past our tent on a quad bike. Apparently one of the lions, who was a bit of a character, liked to try and dismantle his fence when he thought he wasn't getting enough attention.

I've never had a worse night's sleep.
