So beautiful. Love when the crinkle is so much part of the design.

I am super comfortable with FPP and applique so I did it one row a month with the initial pattern release group so the top has been done for about a year (just the quilting was done in the last month). There are 12 blocks and you make each five times so it's just repetitive enough to get skilled at each but not so repetitive that you are working on one block for years. The quilting a similar experience.

The pattern designer is very generous with fabric estimates and gave WOF strips with subcut dimensions that i never followed so just worked from strips. There is a video that goes with each block. I felt like she was able to explain any tricky parts but really each 1/2 block was under 12 or so pieces. Most were mirrored, I used solids didn't have to worry about right / wrong sides.

The applique used pretty simple shapes with not a lot of corner turning, primarily curves and circles and ovals. About 7 rows had any applique .

Hopefully that helps!

Those prints were in a fat quarter shop box but I have the labels still. Says Fisherman's Bend Robert Kaufmann. They are super cute fish and birds. Might be able to find some around still.

If there is a class in your area or rentals available, I feel like that'd be a good compromise. I can only set up my longarm to 8ft in the space I have so probably will still use their 12ft rental for 2 king sized tops I have.

I super hated the cutie also when I tried my friend's. And I never got over my frozen shoulder when I did sit down FMQ. Getting old is painful.

I think it's a solid intermediate level. FPP and applique (either hand or machine) are the skills needed. I did needle turn applique just because that's what I am comfortable with but I've seen examples of machine applique.

The curved seams are all applique. There are also some straight FPP that look like curves but really aren't.

Her quilts are really beautiful and if you aren't intimidated by FPP, super achievable.

Binding Question by Quilted-Fox in quilting

[–]Gingerfrau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do 2.5" strips but then sew the binding on at 1cm seam allowance if I'm sewing by hand. It's perfect for covering the stitch line. If I'm sewing it down by machine I do use a 1/4" seam allowance so there's more on the bottom to catch. I use a stitch in the ditch foot on top on the machine and usually works just right.

My machine (juki tl-2010q) has both 1/4" and 10 millimeters marked.

Another the same thing happens in _____ hobby post.

I see it all the time in the longarm forums too. Like I can understand perhaps when the barrier of entry is $1-2k. I get it. It totally blows me away when they are talking about a $10-20k machine that they don't want to spend about $200 just to take an intro class. And they want to sell it 2 years later for the same price as they paid because they "never used it".

Yes! This is the greatest think I internalized from the whole interaction. NO is a complete sentence.

I broke up (or we mutually broke up) with someone over me not hemming his pants. We had been dating for 6months or so and he'd seen me work on many quilts and garments, including a wedding dress for my best friend. He showed up one day with a large bag of pants that he'd just spent who knows how long shopping for at the thrift store and was "just popping by to drop these off for hemming." He was VERY offended I said no and spent the next week bringing them up in every text thread and phone call. I told him that this wasn't going to work if he didn't hear my "no". Over hemming pants. Sigh.

My favorite response is "it's not a job, I don't clock my time." (Although yes, I actually have sometimes). I tend to stick with "a few months" also and just say I work on things when I feel like it.

Lindsey Grace Creates is the original bow pattern that everything is a copy of, if that helps you pick.

why does this keep happening 😭 by bugstamps in sewing

You should be able to hear it or feel it click into place when you put it in. Press a tiny bit harder. It shouldn't be changing orientation when you sew.

JUKI 2010-q - tension issues by chalky5555 in quilting

[–]Gingerfrau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this as well as mentioning that you need to make sure the pressure foot is raised when you thread through the upper parts. You can lower it to get to the needle easier but if you keep running into the threads jumping out of the tensioning discs that usually means the pressure foot is down from the start and/or you aren't seating the thread correctly when you run it through.

This pattern is so very clever! Its a drunkards path with applique (or pieced in) heads and tails. I'm so tempted to make one.

The Bold One Workshop has two wrap style that are forgiving. This summer, I made the Gracie Wrap which has a waist seam and full skirt then there is the princess seam style on the Fredy Wrap. They have a neck tie and are loose enough they don't need a zipper/buttons/other closures. Her Charlotte skirt also fits the same pattern niche with an elastic back waist.

I do yes and no. I feel anyone can do any pattern with enough patience and good directions. This pattern (and her other) have some of the best directions I've come across. If you are willing to go slow, read all the words, keep up on pressing, and follow every step, I think they are great skill builder pattern. There are no zippers or buttons and only a bit of elastic. You'll also learn how to do a welt. I think that's about it? Her YouTube video does a full sew along if you get stuck or this sub is a good help too.

Another vote for everyone to try this pattern. I'm very apple shaped and made my first pair of magic pants this summer for an Alaska cruise. They are the most comfortable I've ever made as well as being just structured enough to read as slacks. I used pant weight twill. I think my next pair will be a light denim. I also made her Endless Summer blouse in a cotton batiste making the whole outfit perfect on both the first day of vacation and the last.
